Introduction
NofigureinCatholicChristianityissurroundedbymoremysteryand
confusionthanthatmostobscureofsaints,SaintCyprian.Thoughhewas
oneofthelittleknownsaints,SaintCyprianwasconsideredtheunofficial
patronofpagans,magicians,andnecromancersformanycenturies.
Eventually,however,hewasremovedfromtheofficialcalendarof
Catholicfeasts.Despitethisapparentdemotion,SaintCypriancontinues
toattractastrongfollowingandtocaptivatethemindofthosewhosee
himasapointofsynthesisbetweenthereligionofthechurchandthe
forbiddenarts.
Contrarytohisuniquepositionasbothsaintandsorcerer,thereislittle
writtenabouthimandwhatlittleiswrittenisofteninlanguagesotherthan
Englishandeventhenrarelycontainsinstructionsonhowtoestablisha
properrelationshipwithhimandtocalluponhim.
Thistextattemptstoaddressthislackofknowledgeaswithinthese
pagesisinformationgathereddirectlyfromcommunionwithSaint
Cyprianhimself,aswellasknowledgepasseddownfromotherdevotees
ofthesaintofnecromancers.Thisendeavorwasbirthedfromavow
madetoSaintCyprianinreturnforalltheblessingsandguidancehehas
broughtintomylifeandcontainstranslationsoforisons,prayers,and
incantationsfromItalian,Spanish,andPortuguese.Thesetranslationsare
myownandwhatfollowsisknowledgerarelyseenintheEnglish
language.
TheHistory,TheLegend
OftenmistakenforSaintCyprianofCarthage,CyprianofAntiochwasa
powerfulpagansorcererlivingintheheartoftheHellenisticworldduring
thelatethirdcentury.Hewasrenownedforhisprowessinthemakingof
potionsandforhismasteryoverthedenizensoftheinfernalrealms.He
hadareputationofbeingnotonlyaversedsorcerer,butonethatwould
hirehisskillsouttothosewiththecointoaffordit.
Asthestorygoes,hewashiredbyaclienttowintheaffectionsofa

youngChristianvirginnamedJustina.Nowsomesaythatheemployed
hisartstowinJustinaonbehalfofaclientwhileotherlegendsclaimhe
didsoonbehalfofhimselfashisheartlustedafterthebeautifulvirgin.In
eithercase,hewasreputedtohaveconjuredhisdemonsandsentthem
afterJustina.Whenthedemonscamehowlingwithtalonsoutstretched,
Justinarebukedandbanishedthembymerelysigningthecross.Amazed
athoweasilyhispowerswerefrustratedandtouchedbythestrengthof
herfaith,thesorcererrenouncedhiswaysandbecameadevout
Christian,eventuallybecomingtheBishopofAntiochwhereheroseto
fameforhismiraculousgiftsofspirit.
DuringthepersecutionofEmperorDiocletian,JustinaandBishop
Cyprianwerebothseizedandtortured—inaboilingcauldronaccordingto
some—andtheneventuallybeheaded.Duetotheirunshakablefaith,their
miraculouslives,andtheconditionofmartyrdombothwereelevatedto
sainthood.
DespitetheovertreligiousovertonesofthehistoryandlegendofSaint
Cyprian,asafigurehewentontocaptivatethemindsofmanyasvarious
legendsregardinghimsprungupacrossEuropeandeventuallyinthe
NewWorld.
ThemostprominentlegendregardingSaintCyprianindicatedthatthough
hisconversionwasauthentic,hedidnotgiveuphissorcerouswaysand
continuedtopracticeasanecromancerfromwithinthechurch;usinghis
craftonbehalfofhisflock.Itisevenreputedthatduetohisintimate
knowledgeofspiritshewastheauthorofseveralexorcismprayers
recordedinthePriest’sPrayerBook.
Inallthelegends,SaintCyprianremainsauniquelinkbetweenthe
practicesoftheChurchandthepracticesoftheoccult.Moreimportantly,
SaintCypriandemonstratesthatparadoxicalelementoffolk-Christianity
thatembracesthemagicalarts.
Hislegendstookonalifeoftheirownasbooksbegantospringupthat
wereattributedtohim.InthenortherncountriessprunguptheCyprianus,
atextofScandinavianfolkmagicthatbecameintegraltothetrolldomand
Norsemagicalpractices.InSpainandPortugal,TheBookofSaint
Cyprianbecameastapletextinthelibraryofthewitchandsorcerer.
InterestinglythetextsattributedtoSaintCyprianvariedgreatlyintheir
content;somewerebooksoffolkmagic,someprayersandinstructions
forpriestsonhowtodealwithdemonsandspirits,andotherscontained

blackritesofagruesomenature.Regardlessofthecontent,orperhaps
becausetheyfurtheredhislegend,thevariousbooksattributedtoSaint
Cyprianbecamehighlypopular.ItwasthroughthepopularbooksofSpain
andPortugalthatSaintCyprianmadethevoyageacrosstheAtlanticand
foundhishomeintheNewWorld.
InCentralandSouthAmerica,SaintCyprianfullyblossomedasthesaint
ofsorcerersandspiritualpractitioners,andassuchfeaturesprominently
inworksrevolvingaroundthebreakingofcurses,thecontrollingofspirits,
andactsofesotericmastery.
InCentralAmerica,theBookofSaintCyprianbecameahighlysought
aftergrimoirewithbotanicascarryingavarietyofeditionsattributedto
him,eachfilledwithsorceroussecretsthatareemployedinmagica
negra.Heisoftenpetitionedbycuranderosandcuranderasattemptingto
breakthecursesofbrujas,orcalledupontotamewaywardspirits.He
alsofeaturesprominentlyinthecultofSantismaMuertewhereheis
reputedtobeoneofthefewsaintswiththepowertotemperher
influencethroughtheuseofanamparo.
InSouthAmericahispresenceinthespiritualistpracticesofBraziland
VenezuelaisratherlargeforheplaysaroleinCandomble,Umbanda,and
othermagico-religioustraditions.Healsohasauniqueconnectiontothe
mysteriouscultofKimbandawhereheisassociatedwiththepowerful
ExuMeiaNoitewhoisconsideredbymanytohavebeenSaintCyprian’s
guide.
ForquitesometimewhatSolomonwasfortheMiddleEasternmage,
SaintCyprianwasfortheEuropeansorcerer:alegendaryfigureof
powerandmagicalmightwhowastobeemulated.Whilehispopularity
haswanedintherestofEurope,hisinfluencecontinuesinthemagical
practicesofSpain,Portugal,andtheLatinAmericancountries.Itisto
thesecountriesthatweturntolearnhowtocommunewithSaintCyprian.
SymbolsAssociatedwithSaintCyprian
Thereareavarietyofsymbolsandobjectsthatareoftenassociatedwith
SaintCyprianthathavedevelopedalongsidehislegend.
Thecolorpurpleisassociatedwiththissaintthoughred,white,andblack

standinginfrontofasmallcauldronofflames,perhapsalludingtohis
tortureatthehandsofDiocletian’smen.Inthesetraditionsofferingsand
prayersareoftenleftinthecauldronandplacedbeforehisimage.
Alongwiththesetraditionalelementsofdevotion,manyhavefoundthat
SaintCyprianiscomfortablewiththetrappingsoftheoccult.Surrounding
himwithbooksofmagic,grimories,wands,andcrystalballsallresonate
withthissaintwhoisverymuchathomeintheesotericandmagical.
Manysaintsareassociatedwithspecificdaysandnumbers.Saint
Cyprianisnoexception.Thenumbernineisstronglyconnectedwiththis
saint,withhisfollowersoftenleavingnineofferingsorexvotoswhenhe
grantstheirpetitions.HisdayoftheweekisSaturdayandhisfeastdayis
September26th,whichwasthedayhewasmartyred.
UsingacombinationofsymbolsthatstronglyresonatewithSaintCyprian,
onecanbegintoerectashrineoraltarwhichcanthenactasameansby
whichtodevelopastrongrapportandconnectionwithhim.

Asthesmokeoftheincenserises,praysincerelytoSaintCyprian.Ask
thatheacceptyourofferingsandthathemaybepleasedwiththem.Ask

Usingafanorthebackofyourhandfumigateyouraltar,lettingthe
smokesnakeanddanceitswayaroundthealtar.
