Ceiling Songs is a bewitching album of gently pulsing ambient drones, gurgling melodies, rhythmic scratches and reborn
sound machines culled from inspiring, reinvented sound sources - from taped up player piano rolls, broken music boxes,
or instruments of a more traditional sort.
To date, Portland based artist Ethan Rose has produced two small run multiples for locust: 2004's miniature & sea &
2005's the dot & the line in addition to a 2005 vinyl only issue of Ceiling Songs.
press quotes:
"the most gorgeous homespun electro acoustics this side of 'The Boats'; delicate piano melodies, disintegrating musicbox chimes, dusty syn-
thesized drones and the all important field recordings. The album is comprised of three untitled tracks yet it feels like one continuous piece,
ebbing and flowing and changing gradually as different elements rise and fall throughout the composition. A marvellously housed and unex-
pected release this is highly recommended to all followers of the home listening movement; fans of Deaf Center, Tape and the recent Headz
releases should take note!" - Boomkat
"Ethan Rose hails from Portland, Oregon and is yet another prime indicator of the blossoming rewards that continually spring from its fertile
soil. Sculpturing lost yet somewhat recognizable sounds into unusual sophisticated art works is the force driving Ceiling Songs. Rose likes to
dismantle the framework noises that pour out of old music boxes, mechanized instruments, player pianos, and conventional instruments and
restructure them into unique & virtually unheard audio designs. Basically he takes those substantial sounds from primarily automated instru-
ments and alters them in varying ways, blending his own artistic construction with that of said object. It's pretty fuckin' ingenious and the result
is a splendid ambient ocean that thumps and chimes in a smooth motion. It's an extremely sedated, soft, & pleasing melodic climate. Specific
ethereal elements remain constant while other light tones shift about in staggered patterns. Explore these experimental, intentional, and acci-
dental recordings. Reconstructed resonating relaxation vibrations from antiquated gizmos & gadgets are the perfect soundtrack for floating on
the ceiling. Going up?" - KFJC Online
