While looking at the games of

Anand, recently, I found out that

against Kramnik’s 7.Ãb3 or

Botvinnik’s 7.a4 he usually sim-

ply takes on d4 on his 7th move.

That was a slight surprise. Aren’t

you supposed to play 7...Àc6

first, to provoke 8.©e2 and only

then take on d4? This forces your

opponent to put his king’s rook

on d1. And this white set-up

looks less aggressive than, for ex-

ample, the one with ©e2 and

Õad1.

And why does Anand allow his

opponent to develop his dark-

squared bishop so early? Is he try-

ing to avoid the innocent-looking

possibility 8.dc5? Or was he

afraid of Zviagintsev’s 8.Àe5 (af-

ter 7...Àc6)? Not likely...

Turn it Around

I was puzzled until I suddenly

understood that we could simply

turn this train of thoughts

around. Black immediately takes

on d4 and then plays Àc6, be-

cause he wants to prevent ©e2

and Õfd1! After all, this set-up

allows White to protect his iso-

lated pawn and often to prepare

d4-d5. And the great master him-

self, Botvinnik, often arranged

his major pieces like this, putting

his queen’s rook on c1 and creat-

ing nice pressure on all the open

or half-open lines!

This means that on his 7th move

Black can choose between dif-

ferent white set-ups, either forc-

ing ©e2 and Õfd1 or preventing

it! Of course, there is the option

of not taking on d4 at all, but this

often leads to a different type of

position. This logic should actu-

ally promote the move order

with 7...cd4 from a footnote to a

main line in the Botvinnik and

Kramnik Variations!

An Interesting Option

After an early exchange on d4,

White has the interesting option

of developing his bishop to g5,

followed by ©d2. 9.Àc3 Ãe7

10.Ãg5 0-0 11.©d2.

This plan is the main subject of

this Survey.

I chose this option in the decisive

game of this year’s German

Championship against Yakov

Meister, when he surprised me

with a Queen’s Gambit Ac-

cepted. Actually, I was under the

impression that I followed a

game between Kramnik and

Anand, only to discover that in

that game White had played

7.Ãb3 instead of 7.a4. To make

things worse, my opponent told

me after the game that he had

tried this plan with the white

pieces before! Nevertheless,

Survey QG 13.2

White managed to get an advan-

tage after the opening. This

game also illustrates some hid-

den ideas behind ©d2.

Adding Forces

Another important game is

Zviagintsev-Benjamin, Gronin-

gen 1997. It shows another ad-

vantage of leaving the rook on

f1: the possibility to add forces to

the attack with f2-f4, another im-

portant idea of Botvinnik’s. Al-

though Black defended success-

fully in this game, White did get

an initiative. I also suggest some

improvements for White in the

annotations.

Black can try a number of plans

against White’s set-up:

1) 11...Àb4 is Yusupov-Meister

2) For 11...b6, have a look at

the game Zviagintsev-Benjamin

3) Interesting, but not really

tested is 11...Ãd7 with the inten-

tion Õc8 (Ujtelky-Fichtl)

4) 11...©a5, with the idea of

Õd8

and

a

later

Ãd7

(M.Horvath-S.Sommer)

5) Perhaps

the

modest

11...Àd5 (Novik-Karjakin) is

the safest choice, but it gives

Black only little chance to play

for more than equality.

Conclusion

Anand’s move order 7...cd4 and

8...Àc6 deserves more attention

and needs more testing in practi-

cal games. When studying this

type of position, it is useful to

look at the ‘sister’ variation

7.Ãb3 as well and to compare it

with the standard lines after 7.a4

Àc6.
