The Origins of St Valentine’s Day
Another legend has it that Valentine was an
imprisoned man who fell in love with his jailor's
daughter. Before he was put to death he sent the
first 'valentine' himself when he wrote her a letter
and signed it 'Your Valentine', words still used on
cards today.
Legend has it that Valentine was a priest who served during third century
Rome. There was an Emperor at that time by the name of Claudius II. Emperor
Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those that were
married. With this thought in mind he outlawed marriage for young men in
hopes of building a stronger military base. Supposedly, Valentine, decided this
decree just wasn't fair and chose to marry young couples secretly. When
Emperor Claudius II found out about Valentine's actions he had him put to
death.

February 14 is known as St Valentine’s Day. This celebration
used to be reserved for young lovers, but nowadays
grandparents, cousins, friends and even acquaintance of any
age, take the occasion to express their affection. On that day
they give symbolic gifts and send special greetings cards
called Valentines. The contents of Valentines are usually
poems or declaration of love, such as: ’Roses are red, violets
are blue, grass is green and I love you’. It is also commonplace
to give the beloved flowers or candy on that day.
Some people complain that this is a ‘commercial’ holiday.
Despite the criticism, the young seem to enjoy it very much.
St Valentine’s Day is also becoming more and more popular in
Poland. Its followers claim that it adds colour to their everyday
lives.
