Shelley Husband
Hi folks.
You know I love to play with shapes and I have a new one for you.
For something a little
different, this time I ll show
you how to do this with a
photo tutorial. (If you want
the written pattern, you ll
find that at the end of this
post.)
So let s go!
Things you need to have & know :
I used a 5mm hook and cotton yarn. You can use whatever you have on hand.
You can begin each round with 3 ch in place of a tr (dc US folks) or you can use a false tr or standing
stitch if you like.
I like to end in the middle of corners, so instead of the standard ch 2 & ss at end of rounds, I ch 1 & join
with dc (sc US). This just makes things a little neater, but either way will work fine. I only do this
though if I am not changing colours.
Round 1
Begin with 4 ch made into a loop or a magic circle.
UK : 8 tr, ss to first st
US : 8 dc, ss to first st
Round 2
UK : (tr, ch 1, tr) in each
stitch
US : (dc, ch 1, dc) in each
stitch
You might be able to see
I ve joined with a dc
instead of ch 1 & ss.
Round 3
UK : (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr) in
each 1 ch space
US : (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in
each 1 ch space
Round 4
When you work the 3
stitches along the sides, I
want you to work into the
spaces between the
stitches instead of into the
tops of stitches as shown
here :
Stitches are worked into
the holes the needle is
pointing to
If you re not sure what a
hdtr (htr US) is check
out my video showing
how here.
UK : (tr, ch 2, tr) in each 2
ch space, tr, hdtr, tr along
sides in between stitches
of round 3
US : (dc, ch 2, dc )in each
2 ch space, dc, htr, dc
along sides in between
stitches of round 3
Round 5
UK : 3 dc in each 2 ch
space, dc in each stitch
along the sides
US : 3 sc in each 2 ch space, sc in each stitch along the sides.
Fasten off yarn & weave in ends.
Now to join them as blocks, you ll
need a small square to fill the
gaps.
All I ve done is make a solid
granny using htr (hdc US).
Round 1
UK : 4 x 3 htr groups separated by
4 x 2 ch corners
US 4 x 3 hdc groups separated by
4 x 2 ch corners
Round 2
UK : (htr, ch 1, htr) in each 2 ch
space, 1 htr in each stitch along
sides
US : (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in each 2 ch
space,1 hdc in each stitch along
sides
Round 3
UK : 3 dc in each 2 ch
space, 1 dc in each stitch
along sides
US : 3 sc in each 2 ch
space, 1 sc in each stitch
along sides
This will give you the same stitch counts along each octagon and square side. I like to join them by
placing them right sides together and whip stitching them through the back loops only.
Border?
I have not come up with anything special for the border. I intend to simply dc (sc US) around the
edges, keeping the indents to really show the shape of the motifs. I ll add some pics when I finish my
piece I ve run out of cotton!
So there you have it. A new shape to play with.
Oh the written pattern nearly forgot here you go :
