Read the text and answer the questions below.
The modern hospital is a complex institution providing treatment to the sick and injured.
There are different types of them. The best-known type of hospital is the general hospital,
which deals with a wide range of diseases and injuries. General hospitals include various
wards, such as surgical, gynecological, obstetric, pediatric, medical, dermatological,
ophthalmic, geriatric, psychiatric, orthopedic, etc. Some hospitals provide a particular
type of medical service, for example maternity hospitals are concerned with pregnancy
and childbirth, children s hospitals deal with children s diseases, geriatric hospitals deal
with old people s diseases, psychiatric hospitals are concerned with mental disorders. Such
hospitals are called specialist hospitals. There are also teaching hospitals connected to
universities, where patients can see highly-skilled specialists familiar with the latest
scientific and technical developments. These hospitals are involved in research and
provide training for medical students and postgraduates.
Each modern hospital has number of departments and rooms designed for special purposes.
Here are examples of some of them:
·ð The Emergency Department is where people who have had an accident and have
been injured are taken.
·ð The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU) provides intensive
care to seriously ill patients.
·ð The Out-Patient Department is where patients are treated by specialists without
staying in hospital.
·ð The Dispensary is the store-room for all the drugs used in the hospital and the
place where they are issued to patients or medical staff.
·ð The Wards are rooms where in-patients live while they are in hospital.
·ð The Operating Theatre or the Operating Room is where operations are performed.
·ð The Recovery Room is where patients recover from an operation.
·ð The Pathology Laboratory (Path Lab) is where blood and urine tests are made.
·ð The Blood Bank is the place where blood needed for transfusions is stored.
