ABOUT THIS GUIDE
Welcome to Getting Started with TRADOS TM Translation Tools.
This guide introduces and provides general information for the TRADOS corporate translation
solution, TRADOS TM. In addition, the document includes installation instructions and a section
on new features and enhancements. Detailed information for specific applications within the
TRADOS suite are covered by individual user and reference guides. These documents are listed later
in this chapter.
The contents of Getting Started with TRADOS TM Translation Tools are as follows:

C Chapter 3 gives an overview of Translator s Workbench and MultiTerm and shows you how to

C TRADOS File Formats Reference Guide  contains file format specific information relevant to
TRADOS translation workflows. Each file format is individually discussed.
C T-Window User Guide  covers the editing environments that comprise the
T-Window Collection: T-Window for Clipboard, T-Window for Executables, T-Window for
Resources. T-Window for Excel,
C XTranslate Wizard User Guide  discusses the project update utility, XTranslate Wizard.
XTranslation is a way of translating documents based on previous bilingual versions of the
same documents (rather than a translation memory database). It is an ideal complement to the
translation memory database technology in TRADOS. It takes translations from previous
documents in their context, while the rest is translated using the translation memory database
in the traditional way.
The XTranslate process is also known as Context TM. Context TM refers to the use of previ-
ously translated documents as a type of translation memory that allows segment matches to be
checked for context and content.

About MultiTerm iX
MultiTerm iX is the latest version of the TRADOS terminology management system. MultiTerm
Workstation, the main interface for the system, can be used as a stand-alone system or as the client
in a multi-user setup. MultiTerm provides you with access to termbase data and interfaces with
Translator's Workbench to provide terminology recognition during translation. The MultiTerm iX
Workstation product CD included in your TRADOS TM 6.5 package, provides you with a copy of
MultiTerm. Refer to the Translator s Workbench User Guide for details.

TRADOS TM OVERVIEW
TRADOS TM Translation Tools are a suite of market-leading software applications built around the
core concept of translation memory, a method of capturing, storing and reusing human translations
across an organisation. These software applications act to work with, rather than replace, human
language translators. Such a combination of language technology and human intelligence produces
a reliable source of high-quality language translation.
TRADOS offers two distinct product lines, one for translation memory technology, the TRADOS TM
suite, and one for terminology management, TRADOS MultiTerm. The TRADOS TM product line
features the well-known translation memory applications including front-ends, filters, legacy
translation mining and the new Software Development Kit. Also available as an option is XTranslate
Wizard. This translation tool is used for project updates to leverage previous translations. The
XTranslate process is also known as Context TM. Context TM refers to the use of previously
translated documents as a type of translation memory that allows segment matches to be checked
for context and content.
The TRADOS MultiTerm product line features all terminology-related applications including
MultiTerm iX and MultiTerm Extract.
TRADOS TM is built as a modular product comprised of translation tools and filters, meaning from
the convenience of your Start menu, you choose only the applications you need. Translation tools
facilitate interactive translation and the creation of translation memories. Filters work to prepare
files for use with TRADOS translation tools.
The TRADOS translation memory solution is offered in three different versions, TRADOS TM,
TRADOS 6.5 for Language Service Providers (LSP), and TRADOS 6.5 Freelance. Each of these
application sets is designed with distinct functionality for the specific user group.
C TRADOS TM Translation Tools The TRADOS translation memory solution specifically
designed for meeting the business challenges of corporate users. TRADOS TM enables global
organisations to capture the maximum value from their language departments and
localization vendors. With TRADOS TM Translation Tools you can work in a standalone
fashion using file based translation memories or in conjunction with TRADOS TM Server as a
client.
C TRADOS TM Server  TM Server is the client/server implementation of the translation
memory solution. It allows you to create server-based translation memories where all data is
stored on a remote database server in your network environment. The new TRADOS TM
Server technology is designed to process tasks on translation memories with equal speed and
performance regardless of the database's size or number of simultaneous users.

C TRADOS 6.5 for Language Service Providers (LSP)  The TRADOS memory solution
specifically designed to meet the needs of language service providers enabling them to stay
highly competitive while improving translation quality. Through translation memory reuse,
TRADOS6 LSP offers dramatic productivity and efficiency gains - while enhancing language
quality and consistency.
C TRADOS 6.5 Freelance  Designed specifically for freelance translators to increase their
translating speed, productivity and quality. This solution set supports all aspects of the
localisation cycle.

Your configuration is determined by the terms of your licence and the setup type selected
during your installation. See  Licence Information on page 1-10 for additional information.
TRADOS TM consists of the following translation tools and filters.
Translation Tools
TRADOS translation tools leverage linguistic database technology to capture and recycle past work.
By memorising a translator's past work, TRADOS offers productivity and efficiency gains - while
maintaining language quality and consistency.
C Translator s Workbench  the TRADOS translation memory system with document analysis,
pre-translation and clean up features. Translator s Workbench can open translation memory
files that derive from file and server-based translation memories. For the purposes of
translation, Microsoft Word is linked to Translator s Workbench through a Word document
template. The Word document template integrates the functionality of both applications,
making translation much easier.
C TagEditor  the editing environment for tagged text formats such as HTML/XML/SGML/
ASP/JSP, FrameMaker, and PageMaker. TagEditor also includes a range of plug-in utilities
that support tag verification and spell-checking.
C WinAlign  creates translation memory from existing material. Working with selected files,
WinAlign breaks the content into segments for translation memory.
C DTD Settings Manager  used by and accessed through Translator s Workbench, TagEditor
and WinAlign to create new or edit existing DTD settings files.
C XTranslate Wizard  a translation tool used for project updates to leverage previous
translations. The XTranslate process is also known as Context TM. Context TM refers to the
use of previously translated documents as a type of translation memory that allows segment
matches to be checked for context and content.

C T-Windows  specialised editing environments for software resource files (RC, RESX),
software executables and Windows Clipboard content. Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft
Excel can still be now also be translated directly in TagEditor.
Filters
The TRADOS TM suite includes conversion and filter applications that allow you to process widely-
used DTP and tagged text formats including FrameMaker, Interleaf, QuarkXPress, PageMaker,
InDesign and Ventura. For more information on filters, refer to the TRADOS File Formats Reference
Guide.
C S-Taggers  convert Interleaf ASCII files and FrameMaker MIF files to STF formats
(TRADOStag or RTF) for translation using Translator s Workbench and TagEditor.
C Font Mappers  facilitate changing the fonts in Interleaf and FrameMaker documents
translated into or from Japanese and other Asian languages. They map and replace the fonts
in the original document with fonts you specify.
C Story Collectors  facilitate the export of tagged text from PageMaker, QuarkXPress and
InDesign, the ordering of stories for ease of translation, and subsequent re-import of text after
translation, minimising the amount of time that needs to be spent on preparatory and
post-translation work.

The TagEditor, TRADOS-Word, and T-Window for PowerPoint editing environments support the

TRADOStag provides a standard method of describing tagged text formats and bilingual data
for translation purposes. Text and formatting information are extracted from the native file
format and presented in an abstracted file format, TRADOStag. TRADOStag is an XML-based
file format that provides a standard method for processing XML, HTML, SGML and DTP file
formats.

If freelance translators are a part of your localization team, it s important to understand their
working environment. You can freely exchange files with users of other TRADOS translation
memory products including TRADOS 6.5 LSP and TRADOS 6.5 Freelance.
All users must be running the 6.0 versions of the applications. This section briefly discusses the
limitations of TRADOS 6.5 Freelance, the application used by independent translators.
For detailed information, refer to the Getting Started with TRADOS 6.5 Freelance.
TRADOS 6.5 Freelance has the following limitations:
C Supports a maximum of five languages and their sublanguages. Languages are specified
during installation.
C Translation memories can only be accessed by one user at a time.
C WinAlign alignment projects can process a maximum of twenty files.
C XTranslate Wizard is not included.
Translation Memories and TRADOS TM Server
Another TRADOS offering is TRADOS TM Server. TM Server is the client/server implementation
of the translation memory solution. It allows you to create server-based translation memories where
all data is stored on a remote database server in your network environment. Refer to the TRADOS
TM Server Administrator s Guide for details.

PRODUCT LICENSING
This section provides information about copy protection, licensing, and demo mode restrictions for
TRADOS TM.
Softkey Protection
If your TRADOS software uses FLEXlm softkey protection, all licence information is stored in a
licence file (*.lic). To obtain a licence file for your TRADOS software, follow the licence fulfilment
instructions you received at the time of purchase. The instructions explain how to access the
dedicated licence fulfilment page on the TRADOS web site, and how to download your licence file.
If you experience any difficulty, contact your local TRADOS representative.
Before using Translator s Workbench and related applications, you must locate the relevant licence
file. In general, licence file details are submitted during installation and the information is saved to
the registry of the local computer.
If the licence file is correctly referenced on your computer and the information it contains is valid
for the software you are using, all applications will run in comprehensive mode. If the licence file is
incorrectly referenced, cannot be located, or if the information it contains is invalid, Translator s
Workbench and TagEditor will only run in demo mode. For more information, see  Licence
Information on page 1-14. Where necessary, use the Licence Manager dialog box in Translator s
Workbench or TagEditor to change your licence file details. For more information, see  Submitting
Licence File Details on page 1-12.

It is not necessary for users of TRADOS GXT to provide licence information for the client
components they are using. Licence restrictions are based on the use of server components
only.
Individual and Collective Licences
Depending on the type of TRADOS software you are using and the environment in which you work,
you may be using an individual or a collective licence.
C Individual licence  the licence file corresponds to a single installation of TRADOS software
and is stored at a specified location on the local computer.
C Collective licence  the licence file corresponds to multiple installations of TRADOS software
and is stored on a central licence server. The licence server reads information from the licence
file and monitors use of the software within the LAN, WAN or Internet environment. The
terms of the licence may impose restrictions with regard to the use of certain applications. In
particular, specific restrictions may apply to Translator s Workbench when working with

server-based translation memories. For more information see TM Server Licence Restrictions
in the Translator s Workbench User Guide.
Submitting Licence File Details
Use the Licence Manager dialog box in Translator s Workbench to change your licence file details at
any time. Before doing so, make sure you have the necessary licence file or server details.
C If you are using an individual licence, locate the relevant licence file on your local computer.
C If you are using a collective licence, ask your TRADOS administrator for the name of the
computer on which the licence server software is installed and the port used to access it. This
information will be supplied in the format port@server. For example, 27000@MyServer
indicates that the name of the licence server computer is MyServer, and the port number for
accessing it is 27000.

E
27000 is also the default port number for accessing the licence server.
To change your licence file details:
1 Go to the Start menu on your computer and point to the program folder for TRADOS 6.5 LSP.
2 In the program folder, select Translator s Workbench. The Workbench program window is
displayed.
3 From the Help menu, choose About. The About TRADOS Translator s Workbench dialog box is
displayed.
4 Click Licence Manager to open the Licence Manager dialog box.
5 Under Licence file locations, select the licence file details that are currently specified for your
software and choose whether you wish to delete or edit the existing details:

C To delete the existing details, click Delete, then click Add to specify details
of a new licence file.
C To modify the existing details, click Edit.
The TRADOS FLEXlm Licence Location dialog box is displayed.
6 Under TRADOS FLEXlm Licence Location, specify new or edit existing licence file details as
follows:
C If you are using a collective licence, select the first option and specify the name of the
computer on which the licence server resides and the port used to access it, for example,
27000@MyServer. Translator s Workbench uses this information to locate the relevant
licence file.
C If you are using an individual licence, select the second option and then click Browse to
locate and select the licence file (*.lic).
7 Click OK to confirm and to close the TRADOS FLEXlm Licence Location dialog box and to
return to the Licence Manager dialog box, where the updated licence file details are displayed.
8 Click Test Licence to verify that the licence file details you have specified are correct and that
the information contained in the file is valid for the software you are using.
9 Click OK to close the Licence Manager dialog box and to return to the Workbench program
window.
Provided that the licence file details you specified are correct, Translator s Workbench and TagEditor
are now available to run in comprehensive mode. The updated licence file details are stored in the
registry of your computer and used automatically each time you run your TRADOS software.

Licence Information
Your TRADOS TM 6.5 installation may include the full range of applications or a subset of them.
Your configuration is determined by the terms of your licence and the setup type selected during
your installation.When the dongle is attached to your computer, the following applies:
C Fully licensed applications run as normal.
C Copy-protected applications not included in your licence run in demo mode, where demo
mode software is available.
Copy-protected applications not included in your licence, and for which there is no demo mode, do
not run at all.
Demo Mode
When TRADOS TM software is running in demo mode, the following restrictions apply:
C In Translator's Workbench, translation memories may contain up to 100 translation units.
The Export Frequent Segments, Export Unknown Segments, Use TM from Previous Analysis
and Create Project TM options in the Analyse dialog box are not available.
C WinAlign projects may contain a maximum of 20 files (10 source and 10 target files).
You cannot save alignment result files and you cannot export alignment results.
C S-Tagger for FrameMaker applies the following file size limits to the conversion of
FrameMaker files:
C MIF files: 300 KB
C RTF files: 50 KB
C TXT files: 25 KB
C S-Tagger for Interleaf applies the following file size limits to the conversion of Interleaf files:
C IASCII files: 30 KB
C RTF files: 50 KB
C TXT files: 25 KB
C Font Mapper for FrameMaker can only process MIF files of up to 300 KB in size.
C Font Mapper for Interleaf can only process IASCII files of up to 30 KB in size.
C T-Window for PowerPoint can process presentations containing a maximum of three slides.

C In T-Window for Clipboard, you can translate a maximum of five segments.
C In T-Window for Excel, T-Window for Executables and T-Window for Resources, you can
interactively translate a maximum of ten segments. The batch tools (Analyse, Translate, Align
and, in T-Window for Excel, Convert Excel File to MultiTerm 5 Format) can process file batches
of up to 100 KB in size.

UPGRADE INFORMATION
This section contains upgrade information for the dongle and previous versions of the software. It
also discusses how different versions can co-exist during the transition period of upgrading.
Dongle Upgrade
If you are upgrading to TRADOS TM Translation Tools from an earlier version of TRADOS software,
you cannot use your existing dongle licence with the later version of the software. TRADOS TM
Translation Tools now uses softkey licensing.
Please contact TRADOS customer support for additional information. Contact information for your
local TRADOS office is available at www.trados.com.
TRADOS 5.x and TRADOS TM Co-existence
Many new users of TRADOS 6.5 already use earlier versions of the TRADOS translation tools.
Furthermore, many of those new users of TRADOS 6.5 may want to continue using their earlier
versions while they transition current translation projects to the new system. In this situation we
recommend the following:
If you are upgrading from version 6.0 to version 6.5, we recommend that you remove version 6.0
before installing the later version of the software. If you are obliged to have both versions co-exist for
a time, make sure that each version is installed to a separate folder. Note that the default location for
both versions is the same.
In general you can install version 6.5 software on the same computer as version 5.x, provided that
each version is installed to a separate folder. The default intallation location for version 6.5 and
version 5.x software is different.
Do not use different versions of the same component at the same time. For example close
Translator s Workbench 5.5 before registering and opening Translator s Workbench 6.5.
TRADOS strongly recommends finishing translating files that were initially processed in TRADOS 5.x
Freelance before upgrading to TRADOS TM 6.5 .
NOTE

Translation memories created in Translator s Workbench 5.6 are compatible with Translator s
Workbench 6.5. Translation memories created in Translator s Workbench 5.5 and 5.0 are also
compatible except that user and variable lists must be recreated manually. For additional

Registering Software
TRADOS TM Translation Tools and TRADOS 5.x can coexist on the same computer. If you have
different versions of the software on your computer, you must register the software each time you
switch from an earlier to a later version or vice versa.
To register the software when switching from TRADOS 5.x to TRADOS TM Translation Tools :
1 Select Program Files from the Start menu and click TRADOS TM 6.5. The menu expands
displaying all TRADOS TM components.
2 Choose Register TRADOS TM.
TRADOS Edition 2.x and Edition 3.x
Limited compatibility may apply between TRADOS TM and edition 2.x/3.x of the TRADOS
translation solution. Limited compatibility between translation memories created in Edition 2.x/3.x
and Translator s Workbench 6.0 may also apply. Contact TRADOS before migrating Edition 2.x/3.x
memories to Translator s Workbench 6.0.

This chapter discusses the common installer for TRADOS TM. It explains the different installation
options and covers the installation routine step by step.
Common Installer
The TRADOS TM Translation Tools ships with a common installer for all components. The
common installer simplifies the installation routine and allows you to customise the installation to
suit your requirements. Installation options are explained in detail later in this chapter.
Installation Media
Install TRADOS TM Translation Tools directly from the product CD. Alternatively, if you are
installing the software from a network resource, ask your system administrator for the network
location of the TRADOS TM Translation Tools installer setup program.
See  Upgrade Information on page 1-16, if you are upgrading.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
This section outlines the system requirements for installing the TRADOS TM Translation Tools.
Hardware
C The minimum specification for using the TRADOS TM Translation Tools is a PC with a 166
MHz Pentium II or higher compatible processor and at least 64 MB RAM (TRADOS
recommends 128 MB or more).
C 150 MB of available hard disk space is recommended and a mouse or similar pointing device
is required.
Companion Software
C Translator's Workbench requires Microsoft Word 97 or later for processing Word or RTF-
based files.
C TRADOS T-Window for PowerPoint requires Microsoft PowerPoint 97 or later for processing
PowerPoint files.
C TRADOS T-Window for Excel requires Microsoft Excel 97 or later for processing Excel files.
C Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher is required to use the HTML-based help systems that
ship with TRADOS TM. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 is available on the product CD for
your convenience.
Platforms
C For optimum performance, TRADOS recommends Windows NT, Windows 2000 or
Windows XP. TRADOS TM runs on Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, Windows NT
version 4.0 (with Service Pack 3 or later), Windows 2000 and Windows XP. For optimum
performance with Asian languages, TRADOS recommends using a recent operating system
such as Windows 2000 or Windows XP rather than Windows 98 SE or Windows Me.
C TRADOS T-Window for Executables requires Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
C Your display settings should be set to at least 256 colours (in Start > Settings > Control Panel >
Display > Settings).

Language Support
C In general, language support in the TRADOS TM applications corresponds to the language
support that is installed on your system. For more information about specific support for bi-
directional and DBCS (double-byte character set) languages in Translator s Workbench, see
the online help.
C TRADOS recommends using a localised version of Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows
NT, Windows 2000 or Windows XP for translating to and from non-western, bi-directional
and DBCS languages.
INSTALLATION OPTIONS
This section explains the options available during installation of the TRADOS TM software.
Setup Type
With the TRADOS TM suite, you can choose a complete or custom setup. Each option allows you to
install the full range or a subset of components.
C Complete setup installs all TRADOS TM components.
C Custom setup is component-based and fully customisable. By default, all components are
installed, you choose which components to exclude from your installation. For more
information, see  Custom Setup Options on page 2-5.

All components are available for installation in the TRADOS TM installer. However, the
terms of your licence determine whether components are available to run as normal, in

Installation Location
The default installation location for TRADOS TM Translation Tools is C:\Program
Files\TRADOS\T65_TM\. During installation, you have the option of choosing a custom installation
location. This choice applies to the root folder for TRADOS TM software, that is, the TM folder. All
components install to their respective subfolders at the specified location. It is not possible to install
components to different instances of the TM folder on the same computer. The installer guarantees
that all TRADOS TM components are located in the same TM folder.

Access restrictions to certain TRADOS TM files and folders may apply to some users
on Windows 2000 or Windows XP systems. For more information, see  Access
Restrictions on page 2-17.

The installation routine for TRADOS TM Translation Tools is based on an installation wizard which
guides you through the setup process. You can start the installation wizard from the product CD or,
if you have downloaded the setup program, from the setup files themselves.
If you are installing the software now, locate the TRADOS TM Translation Tools product CD or the
setup files.

C To install TRADOS TM Translation Tools on a Windows NT, Windows 2000 or
Windows XP operating system, you must have local administrator rights.
C The installer also supports administrative and silent installation. For information
about carrying out an administrative installation, see  Administrative Installation
on page 2-12. For information on the silent installation see  Silent Installation
on page 2-14.
C The TRADOS applications (Translator s Workbench, TagEditor, and WinAlign)
support network installation. A separate document with information about network
installation of these applications is available in the Network subfolder of your
TRADOS TM Translation Tools installation.

C From the setup files: browse to the location of the setup program. Double-click on
setup.exe to start the installation wizard.
2 Welcome: This is the first screen in the TRADOS TM Translation Tools installation wizard.
Click Next to continue.
3 Licence Agreement: Read through the contents of the licence agreement and select to accept
the terms of the agreement. Click Next to continue.
4 Customer Information: Enter your details and click Next to continue.

5 Setup Type: This screen gives you the option of selecting a complete or custom setup:
C Select Default to install all TRADOS TM components.
C Select Custom for a component-based installation.
6 Destination Folder: Accept the default installation location for the TRADOS TM
software or click Change to specify a custom location in the Change Current
Destination Folder screen. After you have specified the location for your TRADOS TM
installation, click OK to return to the Destination Folder screen. Click Next to continue.

Option 2  Custom Setup: This screen lists the individual components that are available for
installation with the TRADOS TM suite:
C All components, including subfeatures, are selected by default. Mark the components that
you wish to exclude from your installation with an X. For more information, see  Custom
Setup Options on page 2-5.
C Certain components are only available as subfeatures. Click on the plus (+) sign to display
the list of subfeatures. Subfeatures cannot be installed individually.
C Accept the default installation location for the TRADOS TM software or click Change to
specify a custom location in the Change Current Destination Folder screen. After you have
specified the location for your TRADOS TM installation, click OK to return to the Custom
Setup screen.
C Click Next to continue.
7 Word Template Location: Accept the default installation location for the Word template file,
TRADOS6.dot, or click Change to specify a custom location. The TRADOS6.dot file is also
installed to the TT\Templates subfolder of your TRADOS TM installation. If the installer
detects Word templates on your computer from previous installations of TRADOS software,
these will be renamed with a do_ file extension. Click Next to continue.
8 TRADOS Licence Information: Submit your licence details. If you are using collective licence
and accessing a TM Server ask your TRADOS administrator for the name of the computer on
which the licence server software is installed and the port used to access it. This information
will be provided in the format port@server. For example, 27000 at MyServer indicates that the

name of the licence server computer is MyServer, and the port number for accessing it is
27000. Once the details are entered they are saved to the registry of your machine. Click Next..
9 Ready to Install the Program: This screen indicates that TRADOS TM is ready to install.
Click Install to begin the installation.

11 InstallShield Wizard Completed: The following screen is displayed when installation is
complete. Click Finish to close the installation wizard.
TRADOS TM 6.5 is now added to the Start menu on your desktop. Use the Start menu to launch each
component as a stand-alone application.

After installing, you must activate your licence. If you do not have a valid licence, the
software runs in demo mode. For more information, see  Demo Mode on page 1-10.
Administrative Installation
The installer supports administrative installation. When you carry out an administrative installation,
the setup files are copied to a location of your choice, typically a network drive that is always available.
This means that the setup files are permanently accessible to those who wish to install, modify or
repair the TRADOS TM Translation Tools software.

To carry out an administrative installation of the TRADOS TM Translation Tools software:
1 Insert the TRADOS TM Translation Tools product CD in the computer s CD-ROM drive.
2 From the Start menu, choose Run.
3 In the Run dialog box, use the following syntax to specify the location of the TRADOS TM
setup files: Msiexec /a "c:\path to msi\TRADOS TM Translation Tools.msi".
C Msiexec is the Windows installer service.
C /a denotes an administrative installation.
4 Click OK to start the installation wizard.
5 On the Network Location screen, specify the target location for the copy you make of the setup
files.
6 Click Install to create the copy in the specified location.
7 When the process is complete, click Finish to close the installation wizard.

This procedure only copies the TRADOS TM Translation Tools setup files to the
specified location; it does not constitute an actual installation. Use the setup files to run
the installation wizard and install, modify or repair the software in the usual way.
Logging an Installation
It is possible to log an installation to a TXT or LOG file. This log file provides the installation results
and is useful for troubleshooting any installation problems.
To log an installation:
1 From the Start menu on your computer, choose Run.
2 In the Run dialog box, use the following syntax to specify the location and file name of your
setup files and the installation log file:
Msiexec /I "c:\path to msi\myinstall.msi" /l*v "c:\path to logfile\mylog.txt".

C Msiexec is the Windows installer service.
C /i denotes the installation request.
C /l*v denotes a verbose log file.
To customise the installation log file, substitute /l*v with the alternatives below:
C /le denotes a log file containing errors only.
C /lw denotes a log file containing warnings only.
C /lp+ denotes a log file containing properties only.
3 Click OK to start the installation and to create the installation log file.
Silent Installation
You can also perform a silent or unattended installation of the TRADOS TM Translation Tools.
To perform a silent installation:
1 Select Run from the Start menu.
2 Enter the command:
msiexec.exe /i "" /qn
This runs a complete installation. The installation location is the same as for a standard installation.
See  Installation Location on page 2-6. For information about silent installation, see the TRADOS

MAINTAINING YOUR INSTALLATION
You can modify, repair or remove your TRADOS TM applications installation at any time using the
program maintenance features available with the installer. These features are available on the
Program Maintenance screen of the installation wizard as follows:
C Modify  use this option to add or remove components to and from your installation.
C Repair  use this option to repair or restore missing files, shortcuts or registry entries in your
installation.
C Remove  use this option to remove the TRADOS TM software set completely from your
computer.
You can access the installation wizard and program maintenance features through the Add/Remove
Programs Properties dialog box in the Control Panel of your computer. Alternatively, if you still have
access to the installer setup files, you can start the wizard by double-clicking the TRADOS TM
Translation Tools.msi or setup.exe files.

To repair or modify your TRADOS TM installation, you must have access to the installer
setup files in their original location.
Modifying your Installation
Use the modify feature in the TRADOS TM installer to add or remove components from your
current installation.
To modify your installation:
1 From the Start menu on your computer, choose Settings > Control Panel.
2 In the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs to open the Add/Remove Programs
Properties dialog box.
3 In the Install/Uninstall tab, select TRADOS TM Translation Tools from the list of programs
and click Change (Windows NT, 2000, XP) or Add/Remove (Windows 98, Me). This starts the
TRADOS TM Translation Tools installation wizard.

4 In the installation wizard, click Next to continue to the Program Maintenance screen:
5 In the Program Maintenance screen, select Modify and then Next to continue.
6 The Custom Setup screen lists all TRADOS TM components and indicates which components
are currently included in your installation.
C Click on the plus (+) signs in the component tree to display all subfeatures.
C Select the components to add to your installation. Note that subfeatures cannot be
installed independently of their parent features.
C Mark the components to remove from your installation with an X. Removing a parent
feature also removes its subfeatures.
7 Click Next to continue and proceed with the installation as outlined in the previous section.

Repairing your Installation
Use the repair feature in the TRADOS TM installer to repair or restore missing files or registry
entries in your installation.
To repair your installation:
1 From the Start menu on your computer, choose Settings > Control Panel.
2 In the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs to open the Add/Remove Programs
Properties dialog box.
3 In the Install/Uninstall tab, select TRADOS TM Translation Tools from the list of programs
and click Change (Windows 2000, XP) or Add/Remove (Windows NT, 98, Me). This starts the
TRADOS TM Translation Tools installation wizard.
4 In the installation wizard, click Next to go to the Program Maintenance screen.
5 In the Program Maintenance screen, select Repair and then Next to continue.
6 On the Ready to Repair Program screen, click Install. The installation wizard automatically runs
the repair feature. When it is complete, click Finish.
Removing TRADOS TM Applications
Use the remove feature in the installer to remove all TRADOS TM files, folders and registry entries
from your computer.
The Remove option is available on the Program Maintenance screen of the TRADOS TM Translation
Tools installation wizard. For more information on how to access this wizard, see  Repairing your
Installation on page 2-17.
Access Restrictions
Access restrictions to certain TRADOS TM files and folders may apply to some users on Windows
2000 or Windows XP systems. The files that are most likely to be subject to access restrictions and
the consequences for restricted users are outlined in this section.

Sample Files
The default installation location for TRADOS TM Translation Tools sample files is
C:\Program Files\TRADOS\T65_TM\Samples\. By default, a restricted user on Windows 2000 or
Windows XP does not have write access to subfolders and files that are located in C:\Program Files.
This means the user is unable to use the sample files. The user must be granted write access to the
Samples subfolder. Alternatively, the sample files can be copied to a location where the user has write
access.
Search Tab in Help Files
Clicking on the Search tab in a Windows-based Help file generates an FTS file in C:\Winnt\Help. By
default, a restricted user on Windows 2000 or Windows XP does not have write access to this folder.
This means the user is unable to use the Search tab in TRADOS TM Windows-based Help files. The
user must be granted write access to C:\Winnt\Help.

ABOUT TRANSLATOR S WORKBENCH
Translator's Workbench is a database system. It stores language data that can be used during
translation. This language data is readily accessible when you translate in any of the Workbench
editing environments, including Microsoft Word, TRADOS TagEditor and the TRADOS
T-Windows.
Translator s Workbench stores language data in translation memory files. Language data is stored in
the form of bilingual sentence or segment pairs; each bilingual segment pair is known as a translation
unit. Translation units that are stored in a Workbench translation memory can be reused in multiple
translation projects.
Each new translation memory that you create in Translator s Workbench is empty. As you translate,
you fill the translation memory with translation units by saving new source segments and their
target language equivalents to the memory. Each source segment that you select for translation is
compared to the source segments that have been added to the translation memory. If a matching
segment is found in the translation memory, the corresponding translation is offered to you. You
can accept or modify the suggested translation. This recycling of previous translations increases the
speed and efficiency of the translation process and the quality of the translations that you produce.
Translation of Word documents takes place in the familiar Microsoft Word environment. Other file
formats are translated in TRADOS TagEditor or the TRADOS T-Windows.
As well as providing access to language data that is stored in its own translation memory files,
Translator s Workbench works with MultiTerm to provide direct access to terminology data during
translation. This feature is known as active term recognition.

ABOUT MULTITERM
MultiTerm is a database system. It stores terminology and related information that can be used for
translation. MultiTerm can be used as a terminology management system in stand-alone mode or in
conjunction with Translator s Workbench to provide access to terminology data during translation.

TRADOS 6.5 supports active term recognition with both MultiTerm 5.5 and MultiTerm iX. The
examples in this book use MultiTerm iX.
MultiTerm stores terminology and related information in multilingual termbase files. Within each
termbase, terminology data is organised into termbase entries: each entry contains at least one term.
A typical termbase entry might contain a term, term translations in several languages and descriptive
information about the entry as a whole and about the individual terms. The termbase can be
searched in any language direction.
Each new termbase that you create in MultiTerm is empty. You can populate the termbase easily by
adding existing terminology lists or glossaries, usually through a simple conversion process. You can
also populate the termbase by adding individual entries manually.

SETTING UP THE WORD EDITING ENVIRONMENT
This section discusses how to set up Translator s Workbench, MultiTerm and the Word editing
environment.

The examples in this chapter are based on sample files that are automatically installed with
TRADOS 6.5. If you are using TRADOS 6.5 for the first time, TRADOS recommends that you use
the sample files to work through the examples on your own computer.
The TRADOS 6.5 sample files are installed to the following directory by default:
C:\Program Files\Trados\T65_TM\Samples\...

Use the Microsoft Word editing environment to translate Word and RTF documents. Other file
formats are translated in TRADOS TagEditor and the TRADOS T-Windows. For more

Working with MultiTerm
With MultiTerm iX, you can store termbase data locally on your personal computer or, in a
multi-user setup, on a remote database server. Translator s Workbench supports terminology
recognition with both local and remote termbases. In order to access both types of termbase, you
must install the MultiTerm iX client locally.

Setting Up Translator s Workbench
To set up Translator s Workbench:
1 Launch Translator s Workbench from the Start menu on your computer (Start > Programs >
TRADOS TM 6.5> Translator s Workbench).
2 Arrange the Workbench program window so that it covers approximately the upper
third of your screen.

3 From the File menu, choose New. In the Create Translation Memory dialog box, select
English as your source language and Spanish, in this example, as your target language.
Click Create. Enter a file name, in this example, My First Memory, and click Save. You
have just created an empty translation memory.
4 From the Options menu select Terminology Recognition Options. The Terminology
Recognition Options dialog box opens with the Termbase tab open:
5 The Termbase tab of the Term Recognition Options dialog box is displayed. Under
Terminology Provider, select MultiTerm for the purpose of this example.

6 Under Termbase Location, click Browse to open the Select Termbase dialog box.
7 In the Select Termbase dialog box, specify whether you wish to select a local or a
remote termbase.
8 If the termbase you wish to use is stored locally, select Local (Jet) and choose a
termbase from the Termbases list. The sample termbase, Local Sample, is available
from the list of local termbases.
9 In the Terminology Recognition Options dialog box, check that the name and location
of the selected termbase are displayed in the Termbase location text box.
10 Under Language selection, you specify the language direction for the selected
termbase. In order for terminology recognition to work, the language direction of the
selected termbase must correspond to the language direction of the translation
memory you intend to use. We have selected the local sample termbase, Local Sample,
for term recognition and the language direction is set to English-Spanish.
11 Click the Settings tab to specify the Minimum match value and Search depth for term
recognition searches. For more information, see  Term Recognition Settings in the
Translator s Workbench User Guide.
12 Click OK to confirm the termbase settings and to return to the main program window
for Translator s Workbench.
13 From the Options menu in Translator s Workbench, select Term Recognition to turn
the term recognition feature on. When this feature is active, the Workbench program
window includes a dedicated terminology window.

14 The interface between Translator s Workbench and MultiTerm iX is now set up for
active term recognition during translation.
You now have a translation memory that can be used to store new and recycle existing translations.
The specified MultiTerm termbase will provide you with additional support at term level.

In the context of the TRADOS TM Server system, Translator s Workbench can be used to
work with both file-based and server-based translation memories. When you use a server-
based translation memory, you access it by selecting Connect from the File menu.

Setting up Microsoft Word
To set up the Microsoft Word editing environment:
1 Launch Microsoft Word, and arrange it on the bottom two-thirds of the screen, underneath the
Workbench program window. The TRADOS menu and Workbench toolbar should appear
alongside the regular menus and toolbars in Word.
2 Create a new Word document called Sample A.doc and type these four sentences:
C This is an apple.
C This banana is free.
C This is an orange.
C This is an apple.
You are now ready to translate this document. Your screen should look something like this:

TRADOS recommends that you have hidden text displayed when translating with TRADOS.
To display hidden text in Word, go to Tools > Options > View and select All under Formatting
marks (Word 2000). This makes all non-printing characters visible, including Translator s
Workbench segment delimiting marks. Use the Show/Hide button on the Standard
toolbar in Word to turn this feature on and off as required.

TRANSLATING THE SAMPLE DOCUMENT IN WORD
This section discusses how to translate the sample document you have just created in Word, using
Translator s Workbench and MultiTerm iX.
To translate your Word document:
1 In Word, place your cursor in or before the first sentence or source segment.
2 On the Workbench toolbar, click the second button from the left . This is the
Open/Get button.
In Word, a blue field appears around the source segment and an empty yellow field appears
below it.
In Workbench, the status bar says No Match! indicating that no match has been found in the
translation memory for the current source segment. Note that the source segment from your
Word document is also displayed in the source window (top window) in Workbench.
3 In Word, type your translation in the yellow field. The text that you enter here is known
as the target segment.
4 Click the Set/Close Next Open/Get button . The Set/Close Next Open/Get
command saves the source and target segments to the translation memory as a new
translation unit, and opens the next source segment for translation.
In Word, a blue field appears around the second source segment, and an empty yellow field is
created for the target segment.

In Workbench, the status bar again says No Match! indicating that no match has been
found in the translation memory for the current source segment. In the source window
however, you can see that the word free has a red bracket over it. This means that a
matching term has been found in the MultiTerm termbase. The term, and its translation,
appear in the terminology window (to the right) in Workbench:
5 Start translating the source segment and when you need the translation for the term
free, click the Get Current Term button . This command inserts the target term into
the target field at the cursor position. Finish translating the segment.
6 Click Set/Close Next Open/Get to save the source and target segments to the
translation memory as a new translation unit and to open the next segment for
translation.
In Word, a blue field appears around the source segment and a yellow field appears for your
target segment. This time, however, the yellow target field contains the target segment that
corresponds to the previous source segment you translated. The Workbench status bar says
80% Fuzzy Match.
When you moved to the third segment, Workbench searched the translation memory for a
source segment that was identical or similar. It found a similar source segment in the memory
and inserted the corresponding target segment in the target field in Word. The target segment
from the memory requires editing as it only represents a partial translation for the current
source segment in Word.

In Workbench, the source segment for translation is displayed in the source window. The
matching source segment and the corresponding target segment are displayed in the
translation memory window underneath. The difference between the two source segments (the
source segment for translation and the matching source segment from the memory) is
highlighted in yellow.
7 In Word, edit the target segment by replacing the translation for apple with the
translation for orange.
8 Click Set/Close Next Open/Get to save the source and target segments to the
translation memory as a new translation unit and to open the final segment for
translation.
In Word, a blue field appears around the source segment again. This time, however, the target
segment that is retrieved from the translation memory appears in a green target field. The
green target field indicates that Workbench found an exact match for the current source
segment in the translation memory. There is no need to modify the target segment because it
corresponds to an exact match between source segments.
9 Click Set/Close to close and save this translation unit to the translation memory.
Translation of the Word document is now finished.
CLEANING UP AFTER TRANSLATION
During translation, target segments are added to your document, alongside the original source
segments. Source segments are formatted as hidden text. This section covers how to remove source
text after translation.
To remove the source text from the translated document:
1 Save and close the Word document, but do not close Word.
2 From the Tools menu in Translator s Workbench, choose Clean Up.
3 In the Clean Up Files dialog box, click Add. Browse to the directory where you saved the
Word document, select it and click Open. The Word document is added to the list of
files to clean up.

To update the contents of your translation memory during clean up, select Update TM under
Changed Translations. This option is useful if you have made changes to the translated
document outside Translator s Workbench.

4 Click Clean Up. Workbench removes the original source segments from your
document and the Workbench segment delimiters that are used during translation to
separate source and target segments in your document.
5 Close the Clean Up Files dialog box.
Open the clean, translated document in Word.

WinAlign allows you to create translation memory content by aligning source and target material
that has been already translated.
WinAlign examines source and target language texts and links the individual source and target
segments together to form segment pairs or translation units. After the links have been edited and
reviewed, the results of the alignment are exported to a text file. The alignment results can then be
imported from the text file into a new or existing translation memory. Once the data is available in
translation memory format, it can be used during translation in any of the Workbench editing
environments.

ALIGNING SOURCE AND TARGET FILES
This section covers how to set up a basic alignment project in WinAlign and how to align the source
and target data. Also discussed is how to export the alignment results to an external text file.
To align source and target files:
1 Launch WinAlign from the Start menu on your computer (Start > Programs > TRADOS 6.5
(Freelance) > WinAlign).
2 From the File menu in WinAlign, select New Project. The New WinAlign Project dialog
box is displayed. This dialog box contains several tabs.
3 In the General tab, specify the following information for your project:
C Click Source Language to open the Select Language dialog box where you can select a
source language for your project, in this example English (United Kingdom). Click OK to
confirm and to return to the General tab.

file with a *.txt extension) and click Save. WinAlign informs you when the export is
complete.
The export file contains a copy of each segment pair that was created during the alignment. Use
Translator s Workbench to import the contents of the export file to a translation memory where
they are stored as translation units. The import process is outlined in the following section.
Saving Your Alignment Project
In case you do not have time to review the whole file pair at once, you can save the alignment project
as an external file and continue the revision process later on. All corrections that you have made to
the alignment links will be preserved.
C From the File menu, choose Save Project As. In the Save Project As dialog box, specify a name
and location for your project file. Click Save. WinAlign creates a project file with a *.pjt
extension in the specified location.
To open this project at a later stage, go to the File menu in WinAlign and choose Open Project.

In Translator s Workbench, you can import alignment results into an existing translation memory
or into a new memory. This section covers how to import the alignment results into a new translation
memory.
To create a new translation memory and import alignment results:
1 Launch Translator s Workbench from the Start menu on your computer (Start > Programs >
TRADOS 6.5 (Freelance) > Translator s Workbench).
2 From the File menu, choose New. In the Create Translation Memory dialog box, select
source and a target language for your new translation memory. The source and target
languages in the translation memory must correspond to the languages that featured
in your alignment project.
3 Specify a file name and location for the new translation memory and click Save. You
have just created an empty translation memory which remains open in Translator s
Workbench.
4 To import the alignment results go to the File menu in Translator s Workbench and
choose Import.
5 In the Import dialog box, under Import Mode, select Large Import File. Click OK to
accept the remaining default settings.
6 In the Open Import File dialog box, browse to select the export file (*.txt) that
contains your alignment results and click Open.
7 Translator's Workbench imports the segment pairs into the translation memory where
they are stored as translation units.
When the import is finished, the import results are displayed in the Workbench status bar.
Your translation memory can now be used for translations of upcoming projects.
