Like all children, John loved Bonfire Night celebrations on 5th November held annually all over
Britain. Bonfire Night commemorates the events of 1605 when a group of conspirators tried to blow
up the English Parliament and in this way kill King James I and other important figures. The plot
was discovered and Guy Fawkes, who was one of the traitors, executed. British people celebrate
that the king was not killed. John liked the celebrations, especially walking along the streets with
the Guy a dummy of Guy Fawkes. And in the evening lots of people gathered round a huge
bonfire to burn the Guys. Traditional songs were sung, sausages and potatoes were eaten. And at the
end there was a breathtaking fireworks display. It was great fun and John has lots of memories of
those days.
