We investigated an effect of fluvastatin on antioxidant plasma activity in patients with stable angina with average cholesterol levels. The patients were randomly allotted into two groups. The study group consisted of 14 patients who were administered fluvastatin orally 40 mg once daily at bedtime, and the control group of 10 patients with no drug administration. Our study has been approved by the local Ethics Committee. Blood samples were collected for examination from cubital vein before and after 1-month treatment period on fluvastatin. Antioxidant activity of blood plasma was determined by a modification of Pellegrini et al. method, based on reduction of preformed cation radical of 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) by blood plasma. In the study group fluvastatin significantly (p<0.05) increased antioxidant activity of blood plasma after 30 days of the treatment, in comparison to the control group.

The results of our studies have demonstrated that fluvastatin has an additional mechanism independent on the effect on cholesterol concentration.
