In this gross specimen the luminal surface of the abdominal aorta has been exposed. In the top 1/3 of the screen is the lumen of the aorta lined by fibro-fatty plaques (atheromas)--the yellowish shiny material. The lower 2/3 of the field is occupied by a large thrombus which fills the saccular dilatation of the aortic aneurysm. It appears that the common iliacs are forming just distal to the aneurysm at the very bottom of the screen.
