Never Use Hyphens in Display Type Set Ragged Right
If you are setting a book, magazine, or brochure and all the text will be set ragged right (with an uneven right edge), your typesetter will usually set each line as full as possible, using hyphens where necessary. That's okay.
But if you're setting just a few paragraphs for display or design purposes, the lines should have no hyphenation. It's simply not needed!
Also, make sure the lines do not form a pattern or shape, as shown here. All line endings must be truly ragged. Use fixed, not variable word spacingit provides an even color and enhances both legibility and the overall appearance of the type.
(Right)Don't allow ragged copy to form shapes like the zigzag in this advertisement. Line endings should be random, or the
effect can be distracting. (Left)The text in this advertisement shows correct setting of ragged right copythe lines don't
form any particular shape, but are truly ragged.
