SUBJECT: CONTINENTAL ENGINE CRANKSHAFT & CONVERTER DRIVE PLATE CHANGE
Teledyne Continental Motors has informed Hyster Company of a change to the flywheel mounting bolts
on the crankshaft flange on all listed engines. The change deletes the reamed bolt mounting hole
configuration and adds a tapped hole configuration. See Figure 1 & 2.
REAMED BOLT MOUNTING HOLE TAPPED HOLE FLANGE
Figure 1 Figure 2
The placebolt used in the tapped hole is of smaller diameter. Therefore a new converter drive plate,
P/N 263912, has been released for powershift trucks.
The replacement crankshafts purchased from the Depot must be identified by visual inspection. When
installing a crank with tapped holes, use a new 263912 drive plate. Should a 263912 plate not be
available, follow procedures #1 or 2 on Page 2.
We reserve the right to make changes in design or add improvements without incur-
ring the obligation to make such changes in equipment previously manufactured.

Some early powershift units were built with a tapped crankshaft and the old drive plate, P/N 206126.
When servicing these units, proper alignment of the converter to the drive plate may be difficult to
obtain. The following procedures will reduce this difficulty. They should be used only if a 263912
plate isn t available.
Method 1:
Install the crankshaft hub and drive plate mounting hardware to a snug condition. Holding the con-
verter in your hands, align it to the outer mounting holes in the drive plate and the center hole of the
crankshaft hub. If the holes do not align, rotate the drive plate until they do. The snugged bolts will
allow this. When all holes align properly, remove the converter and torque the crankshaft bolts to the
proper service manual specifications.
Method 2:
Using a 3/8 x 3/4 UNF capscrew, make two aligning guide bolts. Do this by chucking-up the 3/8 x 3/4
capscrew in a lathe and turning down the hex head of the capscrew to 7/16 dia. (1.10 cm). See Figure
3. Thread the two machined guide bolts into the crankshaft flange 180° apart, far enough so the 7/16
O.D. of the head will pilot the flex plate. Install two mounting placebolts and tighten them to specified
torque. See Figure 4. With vise-grips or pliers, remove the two guidebolts. Install the four retaining
place-bolts and torque. Holding the converter in hand, check the alignment of the converter to the
drive plate and crank hub. Reinstall the converter to the transmission and mate the transmission to the
engine.

For Oil Clutch Transmissions
The flywheel is piloted to the O.D. of the crankshaft palm and mounted with 6, P/N 15946, placebolts.
These, P/N 15946, placebolts are 1/16" smaller in diameter than the holes in the flywheel, but ad-
equate clamping force is available when the bolts are tightened to a torque of 35-40 ft.lbs.
Interchangeability:
Service original reamed bolt mounting hole with original drive plate, P/N 206126. Service new
tapped mounting hole with new drive plate, P/N 263912. Interchangeability not affected for oil clutch
units.
