How to Make a German Paper Star - “Froebel Stern”

1. Cut 4 strips of paper measuring 1.5 cm x 50 cm. You may of course vary on the width and length. This particular width and length will make stars measuring approximately 4x4 cm. Fold each strip in half longwise. Cut the ends to a point.
2. Insert each strip within the next in each direction. When correctly done they should pull together and hold each other in place.
3. Fold top left strip down.
4. Fold the top left strip to the right.
5. Fold the bottom right strip up.
6. Fold the top right strip left. Insert the end point through the loop under the red piece. This will secure the strip in place.
7. This is how the piece should look now.
8. Fold the top right piece down and to the right as seen in the picture above. It should be now parallel to the strips facing right. Use the picture as a guide how it should look at this point.
9. Fold then this piece downwards. It should be parallel to the strips facing downwards.
10. Fold then the strip to the left. It is now laying over the “middle strip”. The top should look like a triangle point.
11. Fold the top right strip and the formed triangle to the back....
12. ....and insert the pointed end though the loop behind the green strip facing right.
13. Fold the triangle back to the front. The top right corner should now look like this.
14. Turn the piece now 90° to the left. Procede with steps 8-13 again. Once completed, continue the next 2 sides the same way.
15. This is now how it should look once all 4 sides are done.
16. Turn the piece now completely over....
17. ...and repeat steps 8-13 again on this side. When finished, there should be 8 points.
18. Cut away the excess paper where it comes out from under the loops and your flat star is now finished.
Or, do not cut the strips and....
19. ......you may choose to go a step further and make the star 3-D to use as an ornament on the tree. First you take the paper on the bottom right, hold it straight up, then point it to the right and then turn it in the direction as you see in the picture. It will look something like a collar when done right. You will tuck this (here green paper) under the top left point. Try not to bend the paper. (Here in the picture there is a red strip facing towards the right. You may have to pull this piece back with your left index finger and thumb if it in your way during this step.)
20. The here green piece should come out through the top left point of the star. If it becomes difficult to pull the paper through, cut the ends to a thinner point so that they fit easier through the flap.
21. Pull the paper tight so it makes a standing point. Turn your star 90° to the left and do steps 19-21 again. You will do this a total of 4 times. Once completed, you have 4 standing points. Flip your work over and do the same exact steps again on the other side of the star. When finished, you have 8 standing points.
22. Cut the excess strips of paper away along the points.
23.Once your star is completed it should look like this on both sides.
