LANGUAGE COMPETENCE - knowing grammar rules of language
Rule 1: A child needs interaction with others in order to develop language competence
Rule 2: Objects in motion are earlier acquired than motionless objects
Asking questions is learning a child how to make a dialogue (question-answer)
STAGES :
Cooing - age of 3 months (first sounds) g,k,o
Babbling - 4-9 moths random vocal sounds (deaf children stop speaking at 6)
Single words - 12-18 one word - whole sentence (holophrase)
Two words - 18-20 months
Telegraphic speech - 2-3 years using 2-3 words combination (lacking of prepositions and articles)
Early grammar - 3-4 years
QUESTIONS ACQUIRED:
Affirmative using intonation
Wh-questions, no inversion
Invertion
NEGATIVES ACQUIRED:
Negative element is put at the beginning or ending
Negative refers to a verb (there no squirrel)
The auxiliary + not has been acquired, sometimes double negation (No one didn't come)
MOTHERSESE:
This is the language that parents are using to communicate with children
Making pauses between the words
Making speech slower
Some parts of the sentence are specially stressed
Making sure the child is focused in the right direction
The words are supported by gestures and body language
