Far to the south, beyond the swampy mid-dle region and beyond the ken of most people of Shant, lay Caraz, the wild con-tinent peopled by exiles, nomads, and slave traders. It was from this Southern wil-derness that new rumors began to filter north, tales that told of the return of the Roguskhoi, of magie airships that landed at night to collect roundups of slaves, and of other ships that came to engage them in ' herce battles....
