NOTES

1.    Sumimasen.

Sumimasen, "Excuse me,” prefaces a reąuest, such as asking a stranger for information. It can also mean “Thank you,” ‘Tm sorry,” or “Pardon me.”

2.    Ju-ji kara desu. Gogo roku-ji madę desu.

"From 10 o’clock.” “Until 6 P.M.”

Particles follow words, rather than proceed them. (See Grammar II, p. 53.) Notę that instead of Ju-ji kara hirakimasu, “It is open from 10 o’clock,” the word “open” is omitted. When the verb is understood, only the key words, (here ju-ji kara, roku-ji madę) followed by desu are often used.

3.    When

Hour. Nan-ji, “what time?”

Day of the week. Nan-yóbi, “which day of the week?”

Day of the month. Nan-nichi, “which day of the month?”

Month. Nan-gatsu, “which month?”

Time in generał. Itsu, "włien?”
