Shawl Collar Knit with a Pullover

The sweater shown i>n the right was worked with a very wklc shawl collar; the center 12 stitches werc doubled.

Il you want to. anJ dependingon the guugc. you can also start the collar ovcr 6 or 8 stitches, or ovci 14 or morę.

First marle the center 12 stitches of ihe front. If the Icft cml of the collar is supposcd to lic on top of ihe nght end, work to |u>t before these 12 stitches. Naw alternatcly work I stitch purl twisted out of the horirontnl thread and knit 1 stirch 11 titnes. Work the last stitch as a Mam selvcdgć stitch or a chara sel-\edge stitch - 23 stitches in rib-bing. Thcn contmue working over these stitches.

If che righr end of rhe collar is sup-posed to lic on top of the leń end. you also work ro just before these 12 stitches. Tire first ol these stitches is the new selvedgc stitch. I hen alrcr-nately knit 1 stitch and incrcase 1 stitch purl twisted out ol the horiron-tal thread. Thcn continuc in the basie pa (tern.

Now widen the ribbing partem by 2 stitches everv sixth row, as for the cardigan: Knit the stitch ncxr to the selvedge stitches and then inerease 1

stitch purl twisted lirom the horizon-tal thread ncxt to it. These inereases to widen the rihbing were worked 8 times for the sweater shown Iterc = 18 additional stitches—i.e., 41 collar stitches in total.

Now contmue ovcr these 41 stitches, and the knit stitch next co them, to the center of the back neckline. casting on an additional sclvedgc stitch (for sewing the collar on) =43 stitches. For sufficient lullncss, Marting front the shouklcr.

work shortencd rows over the outer 30 stitches every fourth row, 6 times.

For the second half of the collar. pick up 23 stitches front the insidc edge of the top pan of the collar, and finlsh the piece in rcverse.

Put the knit and purl stitches of the collar parts onro a needle each, and sew the seam uslng grafting stitch (page 116) Thcn sew the collar onto the bitek neckline.
