Chart 4:
Pattern chart for openwork pattern
htarskt o iwne-lanes umk^J in rmme,...
ar the same uuy os the chart.
Chart 5: For intarsia patterns, every row is shown on the chart. Each box represonts 1 stitch.
On pattern charts for intarsia work. the rows on the right side of the work nko read trom nght to left. while the rows on the wrottg side of the work read front left ro nght.
Largo area.s of color are olteti worked in reeerse on the hack as cotnpared with the front, so that the same areas of color como together at the side seams and shotilders. For thts purposc, you read the first row and all other ixld rows as rows on the wronę side ot the work cvcn though you are knitting ihese rows. And you read the rows on the wrong side of the work front right to left.
In the example shown, on the front you work 26 stitchcs tn ycllow, 9 stttches in red, and 5 stitchcs in ycllow. Thar is the *cqucncc in which you cast the stitchcs on, too.
If you are not working any rihhing, you cast the stitchcs on the same way, bur start wirh a purl row on the wrong side of the work. and read the first row of the chart trom left to right, the second from nght to lefr. etc.
If you are working the baek in rever.se, cast on 5 stitchcs in ycllow, 9 stitchcs in red, and 26 stitchcs in ycllow. Then, after the rihhing. read the first row of the chart from left to right, the second from right to left, etc.
TIP
Sometimes the stitchcs on pattern charts look as if they don*t fit on top of each other. This could be because of ineroases, docreases, and yarn overs. Just put a rulet under the row you are working on so that the previous row doesn t confuse you. On pattern charts for intarsia work, put the ruler on top of tho row you are working on so you can compare the color seguence morę easily.
