Acknowledgments

First and foremost, I must thank the artisls for their generosity in aliowing us to photograph and indude their purses in this book. The artists whose work became projects were especially helpful. We found that all the project artists are also beadwork teachers and are especially adept at explaining confusing materiał.

I particularly wish to thank Nancy Małe for suggesting dotting the firsl bead of each row in tubular peyote graphs. Carol VVilcox Wells explained the turns in odd-count fiat peyote stitch and suggested doing the first three rows of peyote stitch as a surrogate start and beginning the actual desired beading with the fourth row. Carol Perrenoud taught us the use of paper roli tubes as supports in the tubular off-loom stitches. M. Katsuoka, owner of the Miyuki Shoji Co., Ltd. of Japan, provided a detailed description of the loomed project purse. Cenevieve Kreie suggested using size 14° seed beads in the reductions in the fiat bottom basket purse. And David Chatt taught a private lesson in which he patiently answered many of my questions concerning the single-needle, right-angle weave.

The handmade background papers used in the photographs were supplied by, de MedicbMing, Fine Paper of Seattle. The purse pho-tographed for Project Two, Liquid Class was madę by Genevieve Kreie. The purses photographed for Projects Four and Seven, The Basket Bag and Damask (respectively) were madę by Alice Scherer. The photograph of Lynne Irelan and Nancy Małe was taken by Alice Scherer. I also wish to thank Alice for soliciting the participation of the Miyuki Shoji Co., Ltd. of japan.

As this project bogged down, it was a gift to discover the help I needed was within the circle of people I already knew. Karla Englehardt, Mardie Rhodes, Genevieve Kreie, Larry Stessin and Harvey 8ergman pulled me out of the morass with intelligence and grace — not to mention long hours. Karla Englehardt's name belongs next minę on the cover. As the credits make elear, hers is the creative energy in the superb illustrations and overall design of this book. I wish to reiterate that this book has been a team effort.

Organizing this effort took me through a lot of unfamiliar territory. My eight-year old daughter, Maya, and my husband, Larry, were both wonderfully encouraging and patient — particularly when I got grumpy. Many thanks also go to my friend Robin Hain who encouraged me to speak in my own voic.e.

Special thanks go to the inslruction lesters whose suggestions have madę Beaded Amulet Purses so much better: Dianę Amick, Marian Cave, Barbara Grainger, Lynne Irelan, Genevieve Kreie, Yvonne Ringle and |ulie Selman. Genevieve Kreie tested and retested six of the purses and madę numer-ous other samples which helped me understand the confusing materiał.
