In the following example, el que is preceded by the preposition a (al que), paralleling a Eduardo in the main clause.

Saludamos a Eduardo, el hermano    We said hello to Eduardo, Ali’s brothei:

de Ali, al que vimos ayer.    whom we saw yesterday.

In this use, these forms refer to the person physically farther away from the pronoun in the sentence.

Cervantes es el autor de Don Quijote, el cual escribió otras novelas.

Cewantes is the author of Don Quixote, who wrote other novels.

Notę that quien (quienes), and el que, los que, la que, or las que may be used as the indefinite subject of a verb. Their equivalents are: he who, tho.se who, etc.

Quien espera, desespera. El que espera, desespera.

He who waits, loses hope.

The antecedents of lo que and lo cual (interchangeable forms) are always ideas. They are neuter relative pronouns, morę frequently used in writing than in speech. Their English equivalents are

that which, which, what, or whateuer. Follow these guidelines when using lo que, lo cual:

• Use lo que or lo cual to refer to a statement, concept, or idea previously mentioned.

Siempre llama despues de las once    He always calls aftereleven at night,

de la noche, lo que nos irrita.    which irritates us.

The idea of calling after a certain, inappropriate hour is understood or summed up in lo que. Remember that lo cual could also be used here.
