The Arab Banking Corporation selected SOM to design a proposed headquarters facility. This submission envisioned a series of three building layers, each 20 meters in width, stepping back from the Primary Ring
Road to the west and the Gulf beyond. The project was designed as a two 250,000 sf phases. Each building layer was composed of 20 meter units which were stepped at varying heights in order to form a silhouette of terraces stepping away from the Gulf. The top three floors of each unit were carved out to form special floors of continuous glazing and terrace access. This continuous glazing was protected from the sun by 1.5 meter overhangs, 2 meter wide solex heat absorbing panels-which shield the lowest sun, and a trellis three levels above the landscaped terrace floor. The cladding was local limestone with deeply inset Windows resulting in images reminiscent of the indigenous square tower wind shafts and sleeping balconies of residential pałace architecture in Bahrain.
