THE AUTHOR’S PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION

It may be a inatter of surprise to sonie that I sliould add yet anotiier volumc to the already lcngthy Catalogue of booklets of " The Art of Breathing.'' In justiticatinn I nuist State that my tirst reason is. that I have hitherto founcl all such works to be too muc!) of the naturę of tcxt-books on the so-called " art " ; henco it is now my ambition to bring forward a common-sense book on Breathing.

And my sccond reason is that, notwithstanding the scores of older books on breathing, we still ineet thousands of persons who arc unable to breatlte properly- not only children and women, but evcn sportsmen. singers and scientific men. And thousands and thousands still die of consumption, notwithstanding the fart that this could be prcvented merely by tcaching tlie children proper breathing. There is, therefore, still much to be done in this dircction.

That I have succeeded in my object is vouched for by the following unsolicited letter front :—
