CHAINS
FRONT CHAIN OILER (Fig. 2B-5)
At regular service intervals remove inspection hole cover from front Chain guard and inspect Chain lu-brication. Chain should have an oily surface and be free of discoloration. However, the oil supplied tothe Chain should not be in excess of amount needed to completely lubricate.
Adjust Chain oiler (1) as needed. Loosen lock nut and turn adjusting screw outward for morę oil, in-ward for less. Turn screw only a fraction of a turn at each readjustment. Lock adjusting screw with lock nut.
RE AR CHAIN OILER (Fig. 2B-5)
At regular service interyals inspect rear Chain for condition of lubrication. If Chain does not appear to be getting correct amount of lubrication, readjust rear Chain oiler (2) as described aboye under ,łFront Chain Oiler.”
CLEANING CHAIN OILERS
In regular service, gum and sediment may partially clog the Chain oiler orifices, thus reducing the flow of oil to the chains. It is recommended that both Chain oilers be opened two fuli turns to flush the accumulated sediment at regular interyals of about 2000 miles. Operate this way for a few miles then establish original settings by turning adjusting screws in exactly two turns.
If adjusting screw setting should become lost while making adjustments, back up lock nut enough to al-low adjusting screw to bottom lightly in orifice seat. Then back out screw the following amount which is the original (factory) setting:
Front cham oiler................1-1/8 turns
Rear Chain oiler.................. 1/2 turn
ADJUSTING CHAINS
Inspect front chain adjustment every 2000 miles and rear chain adjustment every 2000 miles. Adjustment of front chain can be checked through the front chain guard inspection hole. Rear chain adjustment can be checked through slot on right side of rear chain guard. Chains should not be allowed to run loose enough to strike chain guards nor should they be adjusted too tight. Loose chains will result in a jerking motion at slow speed and tight chains will result in rapid chain and sprocket wear.
Adjust both chains for 1/2 in. free movement up and down midway between sprockets. As chains stretch and wear in service, they will run tighter at one spot than at another. Always check adjustment at the tightest point.
ADJUSTING FRONT CHAIN
La te Mod e I
Figurę 2B-5. Chain Oilers
To adjust front chain, loosen the three nuts under the transmission that clamp it to frame, and loosen the starter crank brace lower clamp bolt (5). The transmission can then be moved backward or forward by means of the adjusting screw (6), which extends through the frame fitting at rear of transmission. Turn adjusting screw clockwise to tighten chain. When chain is adjusted, tighten mounting nuts.
Moving the transmission to adjust the front chain ef-fects the adjustment of gear Shift and clutch Controls. Adjust these Controls as necessary after transmission has be en moved and tightened.
Moving transmission for front chain adjustment also effects rear chain adjustment.
1964 AND LATER (Fig. 2B-6A)
Remove footboard support bracket rear stud nut at center of chain guard. Remove footboard front stud nut and disengage stud from support bracket hole. Swing rear end of footboard bracket down, away from chain guard. Remove outer chain guard rear bolt and remove outer chain guard.
