Iever to slowly speed up engine . The pick-up from idle should be smooth and even. Listen ło łhe 'hiss' of each carburettor to make surę they arc opening equally. Slightly adjusf the nylon-link to balance.
A very fine adjustment is possible.
ALTERNATIVE ACCELERATOR LEYERAGE . (Diagram 6).
The cross-shaft centre-lever has four holes and the link from fhe rocking lever normally connects with the second from the top. Using the top hole gives a very light pedał with long travel . Using three or four down gives an extra sensifive, fast-opening fhrottle action. If you change the leverage, go back to step 32 and work through otherwise the linkage may be strained at full-throttle.
SPARK PLUGS.
The standard grade of pług is quite suitable for use with this Kit.
Alternatives are Champion L-87 Y or for heavy-duty operation L—81 . ENGINE LUBRICATION.
Normal oil recommendations are quite sufficient for use with this Kit.
For maximum engine security under continuous high power we recommend a 'straight' minerał oil with a molybdenum-disulphide type additive .
CHANGING CARS ?
To transfer this kit from one model to another it is only necessary to buy the appropriate set of manifold adaptors. In this way any engine from 1200 to 1600 in the Sedan car or Transporter can be fitted.
Getting the best from your Sprint Kit. (Diagrams 7 & 8).
The Sprint Kit completely changes the characteristics of the VW engine and requires a different driving technique. Diagram 7 shows how the power curve is changed and diagram 8 shows the two torque curves.
Look at the torque curves first. You will see that torque peaks around 3000 RPM and is very good over the band 2000-4000 RPM. This is the band to use for driving gently in town whcn good response is needed. Notę also that the maximum torque is not very greatly increased (about 7%) so don't expect to feel an enormous kick in the back when you put your foot down at Iow RPM,
Turning now to the power curves, you will see that the big power gain comes from holding the torque up to much higher revs. For maximum acceleration you must work the engine where the power is. Taking the engine up to 5500 RPM before each gearchange will mean that you work Over the band 3000 to 5500 RPM giving best power for acceleration.
A good rev-counter is a must for getting the best from your engine but just in case you haven't one, change gears at 25, 45 and 70 MPH on the speedo.
