The holes in lace knitting are madę by working a yarn over. This makes (increases) a stiteh so it has to be accompanied by a decrease. The way you work a yam over depends on the stitches either side of it. In pattems, where yam over (yo) is given, you deeide which yam over method to use. Some pattems will tell you which one to use.

Bring the yam forward between the two needles. take it back over the nght-hand needle and forward again between the two needles - yam forward and round needle (yfrn). Purl the next stiteh.
Take the yam back over the right-hand needle - yam over needle (yon). Knit the next stiteh.
When working a lace pattem you may find it helpful to place a marker (make several slip knot loops of a contrasting cołour yam) between each repeat where the asterisks are. and slip them on every row. Then you can keep track of each smali repeat instead of having to work back through a long row of stitches if you make a mistake.
