4. Black head-dresses, late 15th century
a. Frontlet, cap and veil combination worn by English ladies in the late 15th century (Gowns, Fig 23).
b. The pattern pieces: crown of cap, side of cap, veil and frontlet.
Scalę up the pattern pieces and adjust to the wearer’s measurements. Check the length of the cap side against the wearer’s head size, or make up a toile to check the fit. The cap and frontlet must be interlined with canvas; the cap and veil can be lined with silk or linen (Mełhods, Fig 13).
Cap - Interline both pieces. Join the side piece ends (BC) to form a loop, and ease in the crown. Make up the lining, if required, but don’t insert it yet. Veil - Hem the long curved edge, or linę the veil with silk. Stitch it to the back of the cap from G to E, via C (!), matching C on cap and veil.
Frontlet - Cut this double, with the long edge on a fold. Interline one half with firm canvas. With right sides together stitch across the ends of the folded strip. Turn out and stitch the two long edges to enclose the straight edges of the veil and the front of the cap (DEFGH). Put in the cap lining, or use a length of tape or binding to enclose the raw edges round the back of the cap (ECG).
