Many Continental mercenaries fought in England during this period. This contemporary drawing, from a German source, shows mounted troops armed with lances, Iong thrusting swords, and in some cases crossbows. The costume is typical of the last ąuarter of the I5th century; sallets, and long turned-down boots, seem universal. No piąte armour is visible, but jacks or other fabric and composite defences seem likely. (Courtesy Rufus Embleton)
