The popularity of the ‘poulaine’ - albeit of modest proportions - can be judged from this table, which is an expression of the ratio between the length of the shoe beyond the position of the toes (estimated by impressions on the sole) and the length of the wearer’s foot. This ratio, calculated as a fraction, can be compared with (a) the shoe sizes according to the modem English Shoe Size Scales (see below, pp. 102-5) and (b) the style of shoe.
