Four young women - Sofia Lagerkvist. Katja Pettersson, Anna Lindgren and Charlotte von der Lancken - forming the Swedish design group Front came up with an intriguing exhibition for the Salon Satellite show at the Milan Furmture Fair 2004 Part of the design of each of a series of objects was determined by an external factor or event that affected the design process at random. A hole created by a controlled explosion was turned into a cast for a soft chair; plastic heated and draped like a textile became a curtain-like screen; a UV-sensitive wallpaper changed pattern with the sunlight; and a vase was madę with a built-in fali - its shape is repeated and stuck together throughout the path of its descent from shelf to floor.

A large part of the show, however, was given over to objects that had been influenced by the activities of animals. 'We asked animals to help us out. "Surę we'll help you out." they answered. "Make somethmg nice," we told them. And so they did.' Ceramic vases were cast from dog tracks in the deep snów, and a lampshade was produced based on a fly's path around a light bulb, which was recorded by a motion-capture camera. The rat wallpaper, illustrated here, was created by allowmg rodents to gnaw on rolls of pre-manufactured wallpaper. the holes created making a repetitive pattern that reveals the old wali covenng to which the new wallpaper is glued
