andy, shdi-covered beachcs, crystal-clear water, fresh i air and a warmer climatc than anywhere else in Britain, t the Scilly Isles are a jewel, perfcctly placcd in the Atlantic Ocean, 20 km west of Land s Lnd in Cornwali. Four of the five inhabited islands are car-free and, becausc of strict łimits on the number of visitors, there are no crowds, even in snmmer.

Life on the islands

About one in three of the population are setf employed; working in fishing, farming or tourism. Flowers such as daffodils can be grown much earlier than in other parts of the country. Snów and frost are almost unheard of, which enables all sorts of other flowers to be grown that are unknown on the mainland.

Travelling to the islands

There are three ways of getting to the islands. A ferry called the Scillonian sails all year round from Penzance to St Mary’s, the journey taking about 2 Vi hours altogether. A helicopter also flies from Penzance, both to St Marys and, in summer, direct to Tresco. You can also fly in a piane from Southampon, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth and Newąuay.

The Islands

St Marys is the biggest island and the only one on which cars are allowed. Here you can find the only supermarket and bank on the islands as well as a post office, pubs and restaurants. It is also where most of the Hotels and guest houses are. Tresco is famcus for its sub-tropical gardens. It is dw only island which doesnt have a campsite. Just to the west of Tresco lies Brhyer, its quiet, green, sheltered eastern shore a completecontrast to its wlld and rocky w.. - jrn • ’¹ M A    .

beak. You can walk on Samson and see the ruined cottages dating back to the time, before 1850, when the island was inhabited until a lack of fresh water and shelter drove the people off. On St Helens, it is said that St Hlidius, the son of a British King, is buried although no one has ever found his grave,'

The sea is the centrę of most peoples holidays. Boat trips take you to tlie different islands. There are Fishing trips and the elear water is perfect for seuba diving. The least popular acthity is swimming, not becausc of the jcłlyTish and basking sharks tliat can be found here but because the deep Atlantic Ocean is like getting into a cold bath compared to the shahow and dirty seas around the mainland. There are also prehistorie remains, ruined castles, art galleries and sports. The nightlife is perfect for those whosc idea of a good time is a quict drink or mcal rather tlian discos or concerts.
