heavy lines, which surround the entire design; there is a raised central dot at the point from which each circular element was scored in the mould with a compass; a hole near the edge may have been caused by a bubble in the mould during the casting.
Cf Bayley et al. 1984, 401 & pl Lille for a larger case with different decoration that also includes circles as a major component, found in spoił from the Billingsgate site. Another case with somewhat similar decoration was found in Lund in Sweden (Kulturen collection acc. no. KM 22069; Claes Wahloo, pers. comm.).

Pewter (AML); disc with both single lug and pair pierced; distorted; d 30mm; central octofoil with six multiply-outlined lobes radiating outwards (cf petals); the central fields of the lobes are variously obliąuely or cross-hatched, in some cases with dots as well, and the outer fields are cross-hatched; there is a smali boss between each pair of lobes, near the plain ring which surrounds the decoration; the cement (probably cal-cium carbonate - AML) and fragments of the glass, no w brown in colour, survive intemally; a black layer on top of the cement is probably the remains of the lead from the backing to the glass.
