Chapter I
SPANISH WRITING ESSENTIALS
Lesson 1: THE SPANISH ALPHABET
A, B, C, CH, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, LL, M, N, Ń, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z; a, b, c, ch, d,
e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, ll, m, n, Å„, o, p, q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z.
When use ch or ll as capital letters at the beginning of a word, only the first letter will be a
capital.
Example: Chancleta. Chuleta. Chicharrón. Llanto, Lluvia. Llamado. Llama. Llanta. Llano.
Lesson 2: SPANISH SIGNS AND CHARACTERS
To write in Spanish you must know how to type the following Spanish signs and characters: Ä„,
ż, á, é, í, ó, Å›, ü, Ü, Å„, and Ń. Here it is how:
Using Microsoft Windows with the keyboard set to English - United States (or
International):
Ä„ = Alt 173 (Type 173 while pressing the Alt key.)
ż = Alt 168 (Type 173 while pressing the Alt key.)
á = Alt 160 (Type 173 while pressing the Alt key.)
é = Alt 130 (Type 173 while pressing the Alt key.)
í = Alt 161 (Type 173 while pressing the Alt key.)
ó = Alt 162 (Type 173 while pressing the Alt key.)
Å› = Alt 163 (Type 173 while pressing the Alt key.)
ü = Alt 129 (Type 173 while pressing the Alt key.)
Ü = Alt 154 (Type 154 while pressing the Alt key.)
Å„ = Alt 164 (Type 173 while pressing the Alt key.)
Ń = Alt 165 (Type 173 while pressing the Alt key.)
Alternative methods:
1. Set Spanish as the keyboard language (Explained in Lesson 3).
2. Use a character map.
Lesson 3: ACCENTS (AN EASIER WAY)
If you are using Windows, set the language of your keyboard to Spanish (Puerto Rico)
United States-International. Then, type this symbol ' before typing the vocal that you want to
accentuate ( ' + a = á). This also works with capital vocals. Example: Á, É, Í, Ó, Ú, á, é, í, ó,
Å›.
Linux users, as far as I know, have to use a character map.
Lesson 4: QUESTIONS AND EXCLAMATIONS
In English these signs (?, !) are written at the end of the sentences. In Spanish are written inverted (ż, Ą )
at the beginning and the end of the sentences.
Examples:
QUESTIONS
What is your name? / żCuál es tu nombre?
EXCLAMATIONS
I love you! / ĄTe amo!
