The wood may bc hcld cdge on in the vice and shaped with chisels, rasps or spokeshaves. The last two are easier on the end grain. It is not yet necessary to finish the outside of the bowl. Indeed, any damping lugs cannot yet be removed.
Clamping lugs are particularly useful when the inside is carved, as they allow the clamps to grip firmly without impeding the chisels. The inside of the bowl can be cleared out with whatever tools are availablc. If doing it cntirely by hand a large straight gouge with a decpish sweep (No. 7 up to
