Major Project
As mentioned in the Teacher Communication Plan,  Each student will research and submit both a written
report and a visual presentation of any chemistry related topic of their choice.
This research paper consists of several steps. Each step will be evaluated.
Step One: Choice of Topic due: Monday, October 6, 2008
" The topic should be relevant and interesting to you and be clearly related to the course.
o Sample topics include:
" The physics of rugby " The development of Einstien s formula E = mc2
" Practical cold fusion " Magnetic field variation of the Earth
" Double magic: Element 114 " Dark matter, dark energy and the known universe
" Quantum computers " The evolution of (computers, lighting, ipods, car engines)
Step Two: Identification of Subtopics and Resources due: Tuesday, October 14, 2008
" The main idea should be subdivided into 3 to 5 major subtopics.
" These subtopics will comprise the body of the paper.
o Example: Main Topic: The Physics of Rugby
Subtopics: 1 Tackling, 2 Kicking, 3 Lifting in Line-outs, 4 Scrummage
" Submit a list of at least 3 reliable sources that may be used for your research.
" Generally, web sites that are associated with universities (.edu) and government agencies are more reliable than
commercial sites (.com) and personal web sites.
Step Three: Introduction  Draft Copy due: Thursday, October 23, 2008
" Introduce the topic and subtopics.
" Identify the purpose of the paper  what are you trying to explore or demonstrate to the reader.
" Identify the relevance / importance / personal interest that influenced your choice of this topic.
" Provide a sample of your writing style, including spelling and grammar.
Step Four: Final Paper due: Tuesday, November 4, 2008
Consists of:
" Title Page
WARNING!
" Body
o Introduction " The final page must be YOUR WORDS.
o Subtopic A
" You must paraphrase the ideas from the sources cited
o Subtopic B
in your references.
o Subtopic C
" Do NOT use direct quotes.
" Plagiarism will result in a mark of ZERO and likely
o Conclusion
some disciplinary action by the administration
" References
Maximum Body Length: 2000 words (see formatting on reverse)
Step Five: Visual Presentation due: Monday, November 24, 2008
May include any of the following media: posters, models, web pages, power point presentation
Marks will be based on the effectiveness of communication about the topic.
Visual presentations should:
" be attractive and stimulate interest in the topic
" have a logical and self-explanatory layout that clearly and concisely identify and present the key ideas
