Jim Thornton is Professor of Obstetricsand Gynaecology at Nottingham University.
He qualified in Leeds in 1977. From 1979-1983, he was Medical Officer at Chogoria Mission Hospital in Kenya. Subsequently he worked in Leeds. Cardiff and Nottingham.
As a clinician he has no special expertise. For a time he worked in oncology. then fetal medicine and prenatal diagnosis, and dabbled in gynaecology, but for the last 10 years or so he practices only obstetrics, mainly intrapartum care.
His research is in clinical trials and he has led many, including the UK Amniotomy Trial, Growth Restriction lntervention Trial (GRIT), Smoking, Nicotine and Pregnancy (SNAP) trial. Pregnancy lntervention Trials in Cholestasis (PITCH and PITCHES) and the 35-39 Trial (induction of labour for women aged over 35 years). He is about to start a trial of Group B streptococcus screening. He is an advocate of trial registration.
He was previously editor-in-chief of EJOG and BJOG. Currently he is an editor of the UK National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Journals Library. EJOG. and Acta Obstet Gynecol Scand. He is chair of the Swedish Research Council, Clinical Therapy Research Board.
He stood for Parliament (Conservative Party) for Nottingham East in 2005, although he lost by a mile!
