Lower ability - Ask the children to play subtraction games in pairs using 6- and 12-sided dice. E3ch pair needs two dice. Roli both dice 3nd make a subtraction sum. Use any method to calculate it quickly. Allow the children to use counters if necessary.
Middle ability - Repeat the same activity as the lower ability group but without the option of using counters.
Higher ability - Demonstrate the Bitesize subtraction activitv using the whiteboard. Show the children how to cut the pipę so that the right piece fits into the slide. Once they understand how to use the activity, 3sk them to take it turns to work through the rest of the activity in smali groups or in pairs on the class computers.
1. Ask each pair to explain the methods they used in the activity.
2. Make a taiły chart on the whiteboard of the different methods.
3. How many children counted on? How many counted back and so on?
Ask the children to work through the Bitesize subtraction auiz or complete the Subtraction worksheet (PDF 98KB). They could also play the Starship Cross the Swamp subtraction aame or the Starship Number Jumbler aame.
Ask the children to count the total number of words on one page of their reading book. They can then subtract different things from this total, such as words that begin with the letter T on the page, or all the proper names or all the ’a's and 'the's.
