The most important added value of the digestion process is the production of biogas, morę specifically the production of Cł-h from waste streams (PeubleinEEIU Steinhauser, 2008). The produced biogas can be directly used in a combined heat and power system to produce heat and (electric) power (Barik and Murugan, 2012; Qian et al., 2017).

In a second application, the biogas stream is purified to produce biomethane, a gas stream with a CHa content of over 90% and limited levels of impurities such as H2S, etc. The total concentration of these impurities has to be limited to maximum 2% (Abatzoglou and Boivin, 2009). The most important applications are its use as biofuel for combustion engines and replacement EJ natural gas in many processes. Additionally, the biomethane ^an be injected in to the natural gas grid (Ryckebosch et al., 2011). The production of biogas characterizes anaerobic digestion as a process to valorize waste into energy, making it a very promising technology in the growing circular economy and closing-the-loop philosophy (Davis et al., 2016).
