Excursion Rigi-Luceme

Leaving the Main Station of Zurich, the railway cross es the lateral moraines of the old Zurich glacier in two tunnels. It then runs along the left shore of the Lakę of Zurich as far as Horgen. Here the Zimmerbcrg and the Albiskette, both of Tertiary Age (sandstones and marls) are traversed in two tunnels before rcaching the lovely broad expanse of Baar and Zug. Then along the shore of the Lakę of Zug as far as Arth-Goldau which lies in the middle of the deposits from the disastrous rock fali of 1806 (sec description p. 27).

Here the Conference Members will have to change and take the cog-wheel railway (built in 1875). During the ascent (8.5 km in length) to the top of the Rigi (1800 m) an ever-widening view will be enjoyed and the gcological study of the Rigi can be studied. This mountain is built up of alternatc layers of conglomcrates and marls of the Tertiary Age, dipping southward and upthrusted in a northcrn direction (see Fig. 4). Before and after lunch the famous panorama from the Rigi, describcd by so many writers, can be enjoyed. Lunch will be served at Hotel Bcrghaus, Rigi-Staffel.

The first cog-wheel railway built in Europę (1871) will then take the excursionists over the western side of the Rigi down to the weil-known holiday resort of Vitznau. Hence by steamer over part of the Lakę of Lucerne (Vierwaldstattersee = Lakę of the Four Forest Cantons). The authorities of the city of Lucerne are giving a tea to the Members in the Kunst-haus.

Au sortir de la gare centrale de Zurich le train passe par deux tunnels pcrces au travcrs des moraines latćrales de Tancien glacier de Zurich. 11 suit ensuite la rive gauche du lac de Zurich jusqu‘a Horgen ou, en deux tunnels, il traverse dcux massifs dc l’ere tertiaire: Ie Zimmcrberg et TAlbiskette (gres et marne). La voic ferrec debouche ensuite dans la plainc s’etendant de Baar a Zoug et longe le bord du lac de Zoug jusqu’a Arth-Goldau, localite situee au milieu des eboulis du fameux glissement rocheux de 1806 (voir excursion jeudi 20 aout).

Les Congressistes prendront alors le chemin de fer a crć-maillere (construit en 1875) qui les transportera au sommet du Rigi (1800 m). Pendant la montee (8,5 km de longueur), ils jouiront d’une vue splendide et de plus en plus etendue, et pourront observer la formation geologique du Rigi; ce dernier est compose de couchcs altcrnćcs de conglomerats et de marnes tertiaires, s’elevant vers le nord et s’inclinant vcrs le sud (Fig.4). Le dejeuner sera servi pres du sommet, a 1’Hótel Berghaus, Rigi-Staffcl, d’ou Fon peut admirer le panorama fameux que tant d’ecrivains ont decrit.

Pour redescendre les visiteurs emprunteront le plus ancien chemin de fer a cremaillere construit en Europę (1871) qui, longeant le flanc Occidental du Rigi, les menera a la station renommee de Vitznau. De la, en bateau k vapeur, ils gagneront Lucerne, sur le lac des Quatre-Cantons (Lac des Quatrc-Can-tons-Forestiers), ou les autorites de la ville donneront un thć en leur honneur.
