Oskar Reinhart Foundation
The Oskar Reinhart Foundation, which Members will be visiting, was presented to the town by one of its Citizen, Dr. O. Reinhart, a wcll-known collector of works of art. The Collection includes pictures representative of Swiss, German and Austrian art from the 18th to the 20th century. The visit will start in the west wing which is dedicated to Swiss painters. This part of the Gallery contains portraits and landscapes of the sccond half of the 18th century, and paintings by Genevan artists, beginning with 1800. Landscapes by Calame and the military scenes by Castres are particularly worth noticing. The east wing shows German and Austrian paintings of the early 19th century, including Romantics like Friedrich, Runge, Buchen and Schwind, the “Roman German” school and the early Realists Menzel, Wasmann and Waldmuller. The visitors will go up to the second floor—east wing—which contains paintings by known German painters of the Realist and Idealist schools (latc 19th century) and thcir Swiss con-temporaries. The visit will end in the west part where pictures by Swiss painters are on view, from Ferdinand Hodler to the present generation.
In the hall there are early works of two modern artists, the German painter Carl Hofer and the Swiss sculptor Hermann Haller.
Anaperitif will then be provided by the authorities ofWinter-thur.
On leaving Wintcrthur the journey will takc the visitors through a hilly countryside, formed mainly by the Rhine glacier and showing different drumlins. At Andelfingen the river Thur will be crossed over an ancient wooden bridge. In this agricultural region the farmhouses in Riegelbau style (similar to the English Tudors) are picturesque.
Lunch will be served at Stein on the Rhine, a charming medieval town. The attention of the visitors is drawn to the old mon-astery of St-George with its cloister and the houses of the old town with their murals and beautiful bay-windows.
In the afternoon the party will drive along the river as far as Schaffhausen, another old and attractive town on the Rhine surmounted by its fortress (1564-1585) known as the Munot, the plan of which was inspired by the drawings of Albrecht Diirer. La visite commencera par Paile ouest qui est consacree aux peintres suisses et comprend des portraits et des paysages de la seconde moitie du xvuie siecle, ainsi que des ceuvrcs de peintres ro-mands, a partir de 1800. Les paysages de Calame et les scćnes de la vie militaire de Castres meritent de retenir Pattention. L’aile est comprend des toiles de peintres allemands et autri-chiens du debut du xixe siecle, des Romantiqucs Friedrich, Runge, Blechen et Schwind, de PEcolc allemande de Romę et des premiers Rćalistes Menzel, Wasmann et Waldmuller. La visite se poursuivra au second etage - aile est - ou se trouvent cxposees les ceuvres des grands Rćalistes et Idealistes allemands (fin du xixe siecle) ainsi que celles de leurs contemporains suisses. Les visiteurs passeront ensuite a Paile ouest oCi sont groupees les ceuvres de peintres suisses aliant de Ferdinand Hodler a la generation actuelle.
Dans le vestibule on remarque des ceuvres du pcintre allemand Carl Hofer et du sculpteur suisse Hermann Haller.
Pour terminer la visite un aperitif sera offert aux membres du Congres par les autorites de la ville.
Quittant Winterthour, Pautocar traversera une region de collines qui doit sa configuration a Pancien glacier du Rhin. Differents drumlins sont remarquables.
A Andelfingen les visiteurs passeront la Thur sur un ancien pont de bois. Nous signalons a leur attention les pittoresques fermes de la region, construites en pan de charpente.
Le dejeuner sera servi k Stein-sur-le-Rhin, charmante ville medievale. L’ancien monastere St-George avec son cloitre, les maisons decorees de peintures murales, avec de belles fenetres en surplomb, forment un charmant decor.
L’apres-midi, la randonnee se poursuivra le long de la riviere jusqu’& Schaffhouse, ville ancienne, pittoresquement situee sur le Rhin et surmontee d’une forteresse, le Munot (1564-1585) dont le plan s’inspirc des dessins d’Albrecht Diirer. Les maisons de la vieille ville sont rcmarquables et contrastent avec la partie modeme de Schaffhouse qui est une ville industrielle.
