layers of top soil and rubble from becoming completely saturated and thus inclined to slide down.

By a periodical inspection of the entire region and the im-mediate protection of the parts found to be dangerous, every effort is being madc, at grcat annual expense, by the manage-ment of the railway to guarantee the operational safety of the linę. Specially trained guards watch by day and night the parts exposed to rock falls, thus ensuring immediate repair of damage.

Although during the construction of the railway such great difficulties had been encountered on account of the un-favourable stratification and of the geological and tectonic conditions, it has been possible to safeguard the Goppen-stein-Brig section to such an extent that for years no serious traffic interruptions have occurred. But it will require great efforts in order to maintain and further inerease the high standard of safety which has been reached today.

From Hohtenn visitors will drive down to the Rhone valley and arrive at Brig, which is the starting point of the Simplon tunnel, the longest in Switzerland (19,800 km). After lunch the excursionists will be driven to Chillon Castle, via Martigny and Veytaux, where they will be the guests of the cantonal government of Vaud.

From Chillon Members will go by boat to Lausanne-Ouchy.
