graphical and geological surveys as wełl as borings and in-vestigations were carried out and reports by experts received. The road leading through the vaUey of Bagnes was cxtendcd from Fionnay to Mauvoisin (Fig. 28).

The power plants of Fionnay and Riddes will dispose of a total head of morę than 1400 m betwcen Mauvoisin, upstream from Fionnay in the upper valley of Bagnes, and Riddes, in the Rhone valley; the catchment area is 188 km2, 41 % (77 km2) of which is covcrcd with glaciers.

The principal parts of the schcme are the following:

The arch dam at Mauvoisin, maximum height above foun-dation: 237 m, length of crest linę: 535 m, volume of concrete: approximatively 2.1 million m3. This dam forms a reservoir, the effective storage volume will amount to 177 million m3 at the maximum storage water level of 1960 m above sea level.

Two collecting galleries with a total length of 13.4 km, which will receive the main tributaries of the river Dranse between Mauvoisin and Lourtier.

The upper Fionnay power plant comprising:

A pressure tunnel, 4780 m in length and 3.10 m in diameter. Water pressure: 170-200 t/m2.

A surge tank and a steel-lined inclined pressure shaft, 443 m in length.

An underground power station situated on the left bank of the river Dranse, upstream from Fionnay, and cquipped with two vertical shaft-sets, with a rated output of 42,500 kW each. Each set consists of a Francis turbinę (maximum capacity

11.5    m3/sec) per set and a three-phase alternator.

The lower Riddes power plant consists of:

A compcnsation basin of 180,000 m3 capacity.

A pressure gallcry 14,720 m in length and 3.25 m in diameter. A surge tank and a double penstock of approximatively 1800 m length preceded by a steel-lined pressure tunnel of 260 m length. A power station at Ecóne (between Riddes and Saxon) equipped with five horizontal shaft sets of a rated output of 45,000 kW each, one being a reserve set. Each set consists of two Pelton turbines (single jet, maximum capacity 5.75 m3/sec per set) and one three-phase alternator.

A taił race, 1.1 km in length which retums the water of the Dranse, collected at Mauvoisin and Fionnay, to the Rhone. near the Saillon Bridge.

The gross head of the Fionnay power plant varies from

307.5    to 472.5 m, that of Riddes power plant from 1015.7 m to 1003.20 m.

The total production of energy, calculated on the basis of the discharge of the Dranse, measured at Chable and Granges Neuves, will amount to 761 million kWh for an average hydrological year, i.e. 595 million kWh in winter (78 %) and 166 million in summer (22%).

The substructure on which the various installations of the hydro-ehetrie power schcme at Mauvoisin are built, and the rock through which the pressure tunnels pass, are shown in Fig. 28.

The dam rests on “schistes lustrćs” absolutely solid. During the prospection surveys of 1948-1950, 2250 m of borings were carried out and 560 m of galleries were drilled. On the basis of the results thus obtained and of seepage and grouting tests, it was possible to determine the perimeter of the grout screen. The groutings are carried out from 4 galleries and extended over an area of 180,000 m2. Between the screen and the foundations of the dam, a series of injections are carried out from the drainage tunnel. The properties of the rock substratum were carefully examined. In order to determine the modulus of elasticity of the rock, tests were madę on the toires au cours desqucls furent executes de nombreux releves topographiques et geologiqucs, des cxpcrtises, des sondages, des mesures diverses ainsi que la prolongation de la route du Val de Bagnes dc Fionnay a Mauvoisin (Fig. 26).

Les usines de Fionnay et dc Riddes utiliseront, sous une chute totale de plus de 1400 m entre Mauvoisin, en amont de Fionnay, dans la partie supćrieure du Val de Bagnes, et Riddes, dans la vallec du Rhóne, les eaux d’un bassin versant de 188 km2, dont 41 % (77 km2) est recouvert dc glaciers.

Les principaux ouvrages de Famenagement sont les suivants: Le barrage-voute de Mauvoisin, d’une hauteur maximum de 237 m au-dessus des fondations, d’une longueur au couronne-ment de 535 m et d’un volume de beton d’environ 2,1 millions m3. Ce barrage cree une retenue dont le volume utile, k la cote maximum de 1960 m s. m. sera de 177 millions de m3Deux galeries d'adduction d’une longueur totale de 13,4 km collectant les principaux affluents de la Dranse entre Mauvoisin et Lourtier.

La chute superieure (Usine de Fionnay) comprenant:

Une galerie d’amenee de 4780 m de long et de 3,20 m de diametre. Pression interieure 160-200 m.

Une chambre d’equilibre et un puits blinde de 460 m dc long. Une centrale en caverne sise sur la rive gauche de la Dranse en amont de Fionnay et equipće de dcux groupes a axe vertical d’une puissance de 42500 kW chacun. Chaque groupc com-prend une turbinę Francis (debit max. absorbe 11,5 m3/sec) et un altematcur triphasć.

La chute inferieure (Usine de Riddes) comprenant:

Un bassin de compensation de 180000 m3.

Une galerie sous pression dc 14,7 km dc long et de 3,25 m de diamćtre.

Une chambre d’equilibre et une conduite forcee double d’environ 1800 m k Fair librę, prćcćdće d’un tronęon blinde de 260 m en galerie.

Une centrale k Ecóne (entre Riddes et Saxon) equipće de cinq groupes & axe horizontal d’une puissance de 45000 kW chacun, dont un de reserve. Chaquc groupe est formę de deux turbines Pelton k un jet (debit max. absorbe 5,75 m3/sec par groupe) et d’un alternateur triphasć.

Un canal de fuite, long de 1,2 km qui restitue au Rhóne, pres du Pont de Saillon, les eaux de la Dranse captees k Mauvoisin et k Fionnay.

La chute brute de 1’usine de Fionnay varie de 307,5 m a

472,5 m; celle de 1’usine de Riddes est de 1015,7 m a 1003,2 m. La production d’energie, calculee sur la base des debits de la Dranse, mesuree k Chable et Granges Neuves, s’ćlćvera <i 761 millions de kWh en annee hydrologique moyenne, dont 595 millions de kWh d’hiver (78%) et 166 millions de kWh d’ete (22 %).

Les tenrains de fondation sur lesquels sont construits les differents ouvrages de Famenagement hydro-ćlectrique dc Mauvoisin, et les roches que traversent les ouvrages d*amenee sont visiblcs sur Fig. 28

Le barrage s’appuie sur des schistes lustrćs dont la tenue est bonne. Lors des campagnes de prospection de 1948-1950, 2250 m de sondages ont ete fores et 560 m de galerie perces. Sur la base de ces travaux, des essais de pertes d’eau et d’in-jection, il a ete possible de determiner le pćriraćtre du rideau d’etanchćite. Les injections se font a partir de 4 galeries et couvrent une surface dc 180000 m2. La liaison du voile avec les fondations du barrage est assurće par une serie d’injections executees depuis la galerie de drainage. Les proprietes de la roche de fondation ont ete etudiees de trćs pres. Des essais ont ete entrepris pour determiner le module d’elasticitć de la
