In what was a disappointing aeason for the Stony Brook men’s basketball team. there was one man w ho will be remembered for rising above it all— Gregory Angrum. Yeeterday. Angrum was named Statesman Małe Athłete of Ute Year.
A senior. Angrum soared tonew heighte asheled the Patriota in almoet every category.
Nicknamed by his teammates "Magie" after the Los Angeles Lakers super star Ervin "Magie" Johnson. Angrum madę the Stony Brook rebounding records dis-appear. First on Feb. 22. Angrum shattered the Patriot single gamę rebouding record of 16. when he pulled down 22 boards in a gamę against Purchase. Then two days later. he broke Wayne Wright's career rebounding record of 769. in a gamę against Adelphi. He finished the seaaon with a career team record of 780 rebounds.
Here are some of Angrum'* magie momenta of this basketball seaaon:
• In what he cal led the grea test gamę of his colle-giate career. he scored 21 pointa, grabbed 22 rebounds. and had seven ateals and seven aaaista to spark the Patriota to a thrilling double overtime win over Purchase on Feb. 22.
• On Feb. 20. he netted 19 pointa and grabbed 17 rebounds to help the Pata roli past New Paki. 86-78.
• On Jan. 23. he scored 17 pointa aJong with 17 rebounds in a double OT win against York College.
• On Feb. 11. he led the Patriota with 23 pointa and 14 rebounds during a loas at the hands of Manhattan-ville College.
• On Feb. 29. he played his last gamę against Do-wling College, and had a team high 23 pointa. It waa his laat two pointa that lifted the Patriota past Dowling.
•/He waa named to the 1983-84. Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference All Metro Team.
• Angrum was also a member of the 1983-84, Potadam All-Tournament team.
• He finished seventh in the nation in rebounding among Diviaion III playera.
Angrum’s playing days at Stony Brook weren't all easy. Twice the “magie show" waa cancelłed, when Angrum quit the team after a diapute with former Patriota’ head coach, Dick Kendall, But he retumed and the “magie show" shifted into high year by the time Angrum became a senior.
Bom and raiaed in the Williamaburg aection of Brooklyn. Angrum devek>ped his gamę in the city achoolyards. He attended Eastern District High School. and atarred aa point guard there. He received offers from such schoote as L.I.U., Cleveland State. Potadam. New York Tech. He said the main reaaons behind hia deciaion for Stony Brook waa it ia "a good academic stand i ng school a good social life. and it’s not too far from home.”
Reflecting back on hia basketball career at Stony Brook. Angrum said it waa "eaciting, aometimes up-setting, and very funny being coached by W.C. Fields (Kendall] for four years."
Academically, Angrum ha one morę year till gra-duation. He is studying to be a social worfeer. Angrum is also pondering the idea of gotng to graduate school and getting a mastera degree in Business Administra-tion. or Social Work. He is also thinking of going to Europę to play Professional basketball.
The 1963-84 seaaon will not go down as one of the memorabłe onee, but it certainly will be remembered as a "magieal" one.

Michele White.a 6'-3" freahman baa-ketball player, has been named as Sto-tesmans 19fU F- małe Athlete of the Year. White, who hails from Richmond Hill. is part of a twin sister team that plays for Coach Declan McMullen. who waa named Womens Coach of the Year (•et related artiele). Her sister Lisa makes up the other half of the duo.
White. in her firat year on the squad. has built up an imprcsaive list of statis-tics to her credit. First she. despite that this ia her first year. has the highest average number of pointa per gamę. 17.7. As an added notę to this, she haa scored the most pointa on the team. She now has 632. White also has a 46% field goal average; this is the higheat average on the team among all the reguł ar playera. If this was not enough. White also leads the team in asaists with 160.
Holding the third highest free-throw average. White ahot for 64% from the linę. For her efforta on the court. White has madę the E aa tern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) All-Metro team. She waa pleasantly suprised at the awards she received. especially the Sta-teeman honor. "I had no idea that you gave out theae awards," she aaid.
White is planning to return again next year with the mąjorityof thesquad, including her sister who is also in her first year. and hopes that McMulłen’a team will continue having the succeaa they have had thus far. "There will be a few new ptayers and most of us will be back." she aaid adding. "and we should do well again."
White is one of thoee peopłe who ia a leader both on and off the field. States-man is surę she will continue to acheive her goals at the same pace she is now.

He's only been at Stony Brook for two years. how-he has succeasfully coached the womens basketball team to a 23-7 seaaon. Coach Declan McMullen was named Statesman'• Womens Team Coath of the Year. McMullen is proud of his girls who ranked sixth in the sute. “This is my 19th year coaching and I have never seen a team so put together." he said.
The Pata. howerer. did not start out very well. Their record waa 2-4 at the start of the seaaon. yet, they were not discouraged. McMullen aaid the achadule waa against them. They played four out of the top 20 teams in the country. After Chnstmas break, the Pata madę their coroe back. Thay went on a 16-gam« w timing •praa. McMuIlan sald thay preeticed kard. "It waa tortura, bot we won."
