Polka przez nogę is a couple dance from the Krosno [KROH-snoh] province in the region of Rzeszów [ZHEH-shoof] in eoutheastern Poland.
The name means "polka over the foot." As often happens, this is one of those old names that looses its meaning in translation, In fact, it is not even danced as a regular polka. It is Juet one of the typical vivacious, fast-spinning Rzeszów dances done in 2/4 time. There exist several slightly different ways of doing Polka przez nogę and it can be done to several different tunes, which usually have an accompanying song. Some have an 8-meas and some a 6-meas phrase. The tune used on this record (see the lyrics below) is composed of a 6-meas melody A and a 6—meas melody Bj melody B is repeated which often occurs in Polish songs. The dance was shown to Ada and Jaś by Leodadia Kagdziarz, a well-known native authority on the Rzeszów folklore. It is also described in two books: Lidia Nartowska, Tance z okolic Rzeszowa, Warszawa 1967 and Jozef Szmyd, Tańce krośnieńskie, Warszawa 1961.
