Cladding Influence on Dynamice Responae of Tali Buddinga

H. Palsson, B.J. Goodno, J.l. Craig, and K.M. Will Swiss Fed. Inst. for Reactor Res., Wuerenlingen, Switzerland, Earthquake Engrg. Struć. Dynam., J2J2). pp 215-228 (Mar/Apr 1984) 11 figs, 7 tables. 19 refs

Kay Words: Buildings, Muttistory buildings. Cladding, Seis-mic design

Precast co ner et e penels form attrectlve facades for Steel frame buildings and are generaiiy ragarded et nonstructurtl by ftructural engineert. However, panelt have been found to edd laterał etłffness until tbeir cepecrty or that of tbeir con-nectiont is exceeded. Consequently, the computed dynamie retponte bated on a model of tbe ftructural framing alone may be quite different from that experienced by tbe actual structure. As a case study, the influence of precast concrete ponefs on leteral and torsional stKfness of a 25-story building is investigated. The effect of cladding on dynamie properties and linaer seismic response is explored by wying panel stiffness.

Key Words: Buildings. Acoustic Insulation, Meesurement techniques

Meesurement of the ecoustical insulation of building facades requires simultaneous meesurement of sound pressure levels indoors and outdoors, but there is still some question as to the best location for the outdoor microphone. This paper reports the differences between sound pressure levels at 2 m from a facade and at its surface, for a seriesof meesurement* at 33 different houses.

An Altematńe Approach to the Random Responae of Bitiaear Hysteretk Systems

K. Asano and W.D. Iwan

Kansai Univ.. Osaka. Japan, Earthquake Engrg. Struć. Dynam.. J2_(2), pp 229-236 (Mar/Apr 1984) 6 figs. 11 refs

Key Words: Buildings, Hysteretlc damping. Random excita-tion, Equivelent llnaarization method

An analytkal representatlon of the bilinear hysteretlc cherac-teristlc is presented. Using this representatlon, the response of a tłngle-degree-of-freedom bilinear hysteretlc system sub-Jected to nonstetionary random excłtatton is examined by equłvaient llnaarization. An ordinary dłfferentiil equetion is derfyed for the covarlance metr(x of the response. Numer ł-cal examples are presented and the accuracy of theapproech Is demonstrated. Extension of the epproech to a wid er cłass of hysteretlc systems is discussed.

Soi-Structure (nteraction Effects on the Steady-State Responae of TorasonaUy Co u pled Buildings

T.G. Tsicniasand G.L. Hutchinson Univ. of London King's College, London, UK, Earth-quake Engrg. Struć. Dynam., J2_ (2), pp 237-262 (Mar/Apr 1984) 16 figs. 2 tables. 21 refs

Key Words: Buildings, Interactbn: soil-structure, Seismic excitation

The effect of the foundetion flexibility on the coupled lateral-torsional response of single story buildings excited by transiational ground motion is investigeted. The eccen-trłcłty between tbe center of mass and tbe center of resis-tance is considered to be the only cause of coupling of the leteral and torsional response of tbe building. The study is conflned to the steady-state response of rigidly supported and flexibly supported torsionelly coupled buildings sub-jected to harmonie free-fietd ground displacement perpen-dicular to the direction of the eccentricłty. In the case of the flexib!y supported building the foundetion medium Is assumed to be an elastic homogeneous isotropk hatfspace. The effect of the controlling parameters on lateral-torsional coupling is invastigated.
