Four ty pas of basie wheełchair restraint design were tested. Th asa wara: a wabbing belt system adaptad from a cargo rastraint design; strapping the whealchair freme to staal rails boltad onto the floor and/or walfs of the PSV. a clamp on ona side of the wheełchair and a separata wabbing bałt on tha other sida. anchored to tha opposita corner of the wheel-chair frame and mounted in tha floor in an extruded alumi-num alloy raił; a vertical clamp on aach side of tha wheełchair frame attached to the floor; and an adjustable *A' frama placed at tha back of tha wheełchair in sockets in the vehicle floor and roof. Tha static tasts wara carried out on a frame which was used to load the rastraints in the forward, side-ways and raarward modas, with tha whaal castors set for forward wheełchair motion. Tha dynamie tests wara carried out on an impact siad. with a dummy saatad in the chair.

This article reports on findings from experiments on tire-testing stands, driving on a circułar traćk. The findingt from the tire experiments show that tha curve of lateral force dua to slip angłe fłattens out as dynamie wheel load inereases. According to experiments done on a circułar track, the tendancy to over/understeer changes on uneven roads. Theoretical obsarvations suggested that the tendency to ovar/understeer is hardly changed when fluctuations in the wheel load acting on front and rear wheels are nearly the same.

Wheełchair restraint devices/systems hava bean developed to r astra in tha wheełchair and provide the wheełchair occupent some measure of protection in normal and abnormal (crash) driving situations. Tha proliferatbns of thasa devicas, some of which afford minimal restraint to tha wheełchair occu-pant. lad to tha devek>pment of a program to test and av»lu-ata raprasentative rastraint devicas currently baing marketed. This papar deseribes the progress that has baen mada in this program to-dste. łncludad ara the descriptions of the test fscilłty, photographs of some of tha actual impact tasts and tha description of a naw rastraint system that is under deveiopment.

A procedura for calculating the stress level intersection numbers for a given model of a bus frama operating in a steedy-state modę is presented. Comparison of the calcu-lated results with prevk>u» axparimentaI data shows that tha pro posad method of computation gives an accurate approxi-mation of physical reelity. Knowledge of the stress leveł intersection numbers permits designers to establish which yehicle components ara prona to fatigue failura.

Part 1 of this study cłauifles tha noise condittons typical of acoustically conspicuous truck trailers in road traffic in-cluding tha noise caused by tha striking, rattling or squaaking of trallar perts. Part 2 covers some of tha measuremants and findings applicabla to unłoeded trailers with laaf springs.
