Prof. Czesław Oleśkowicz Popiel

C.O. Popiel is Professor of Heat Engineering at the Poznan University of Technology, where he has been sińce 1962. He received Ph.D. (1970) and Habilitation (1982) and Professorship (1994) in heat engineering. In the academic year 1976/1977 he was a Research Fellow at the Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands (working with Prof. C.J. Hoogendoom on convective heat transfer in impinging flame jets). In 1980 he was a Visiting Summer Research Associate at the University of Toronto (working with Prof. O. Trass on visualization of impinging jets). In 1987/1988 he spent 1 year as a Research Fellow at the University of Manchester (working with Dr. J.T. Turner on vortex shedding). In 1985 he become an International Member of the ASME. From 1990 to 1993 he was a Visiting Senior Lecturer in Heat Engineering at the Energy Laboratory of the Rand Afrikaans Uni-versity. At present he is a fuli professor in the Institute of Environmental Engineering of the Poznan University of Technology and a leader of the Research Group in Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Heat Engineering.

Prof. Popiel’s research activities have been in the areas of convective heat transfer (in rotating systems, impinging round jets, wavy pipes, and in film condensa-tion on spherical surfaces), flow yisualization (impinging jets and vortex shedding), pressure losses in channels of complex geometry (filters, valves, and anemo-stats) and fluid flow measurements. His current research is concemed with free-convection heat transfer from vertical cylinders and from fiat plates. His teaching duties include heat transfer, fluid mechanics and applied thermodynamics.

His main hobby are tennis and photography.
