Kangle emends the reading ‘vara - prabh8v8di' to ‘svaprabh8vBdi'[p.22) on the ground that it is not ‘appropriate’. But a glance at Hemacandra’s text shows that he too reads ‘varaprabhBv8di\ So it must have been Abhinavagupta's original reading. By ‘varaprabh8va ’ he probably means ‘divya-prabh8va

Hcmacandra’s reading and the reading in Baroda edn. practically mean the same thing; but his reading has the appearance of its being original. One, however, can’t be surę in such matters of language diction, style, etc.

Kangle (p.24) emends the reading ‘na nisphalam...' to ‘na saphalam...’. But if the whole context is taken into considcralion, the reading in the printed edn. and supported by Hemacandra needs absolutely no correction.

7. Abhinavagupta on the etymology of the word nStaka : in the course of his commenls on NS 18.12, Abhinavagupta observes :

The MS. correcily reads ‘nala natau nratau'. The above reading in the printed GOS edn. is wrong for two reasons: one, it does not include the first meaning, namely Prahvibh8vad8yakarh bhavati and two, the two words ‘nrti’ and ‘nrta ’ practically mean the same thing. We must therefore emend

the text as nata natau nrtau.
