He mentions that the Saiva theoreticians applied such a serial progression to ritual of initiation and to yogic-microcosmic experience.
PSśupata tradition is the subject to Minoru Hara who draws our attention to the concepts of the earlier unrecorded Sźłrtkhya philosophy in the Paitc&rihabh&sya of Kaundinya.
Two articles relate directly to Tantric texts. Gudrun Biihnemann examines Chapter 15 of the Kulirnava Tantra , which deals wilh the puraścarana, preliminary ritual for making a mantra effective. She surveys the contents of this chapter and gives its text and translation. Jan Schoterman takes up the Kubjiki Upanisad, so far an unedited text, and shows that it illustrates the process of mutual integration of Tantric and Vedic traditions.
The volume concludes with an interesting article by Raffaele Torella who makes a comparative study of the PratyabhijrtS school and the logical epistemological school of Buddhism. The scholar traces the features of this complex relationship, 44 the sublle play of a declared basie disagreement wilh the doetrines of Buddhist logieians", and yet appropriation of their typical terminology by the teachers of the Pratyabhijrta school.
Each article gives good bibliography. It would have been useful to have a brief biographical notę on the conlributors. The editor has provided a complete list of publications by Andrfe Padoux. The book will be of great help to researchers on Tantric tradition. It is a fitting felicitation to Dr. Andrć Padoux, who, we all wish, will continue to serve the cause of Indology.
