The importance of the risk factors in the development of ischaemic heart disease is currently well documented. It is easier to introduce the pharmacological treatment, than to convince the patient to change the entire lifestyle, for example the nutritional habits, that play the important role in altering the lipid profile. The aim of the study was to evaluate the lipid profile in 100 randomly selected patients, qualified to coronary artery bypass grafting in 1998.
Material and methods: 71 men (m) aged 56,6+/-9,4 and 29 women (f) aged 59,8+/-9,3 were examined. 53 m (74,6%) and 20 f (68,9%) had the history of myocardial infarction. The following parameters were measured: total cholesterol (TC), triglycerydes (TG), HDL-C, LDL-C, TC/HDL-C ratio, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, "lipid triad", overweight (BMI>25kg/m2),
obesity (BMI>30kg/m2)

Only 15m (21,1%) and 8f(27,6%) had the hypolipemic treatment introduced. Conclusions: 1. Significantly more advanced lipid profile pathology was observed in men. 2. 85% of men had increased TC/HDL-C ratio and overweight and more than 50% had diminished HDL level. 3. The results show the importance of the hypolipemic treatment as a part of secondary prevention.
