Safety at Work

1.

Purpose

The freedom from bodily injury of its staff is paramount to Schiffahrtskontor tom Wörden GmbH & Co. KG. Through strict observation of the Safety at Work Regulations the risk of accidents is minimised.

2.

Application

This Documented Procedure applies to the Shorebased Organisation and on all ships managed / operated by Schiffahrtskontor tom Wörden GmbH & Co. KG.

Definitions and Abbreviations (refer to VA-001)

Responsibilities

Each employee is himself responsible and accountable for adherence to the Safety at Work Regulations.

All staff who manage other employees, pay special attention that Work Safety is guaranteed in all activities.

The Safety at Work Specialists and the Safety Officers are the specialists for Safety at Work in Schiffahrtskontor tom Wörden GmbH & Co. KG. They continually watch all activities from the standpoint of Work Safety, improving the processes, instructing and teaching the other employees.

5.

Description of Routines

5.1

  • Each employee takes care in all activities that they do not put themselves into unnecessary danger.

  • During all activities the appropriate protective clothing will be worn.

  • Special protective clothing will be worn when dealing with dangerous materials.

  • The instructions for dealing with dangerous materials are available and will be observed.

  • The accident prevention regulations are also available and will be observed.

  • The prescribed training and visits will be regularly carried out by Safety at Work specialists.

  • Personnel and materials are available for performance of first aid.

  • Employees will only be given tasks for which they are bodily able and qualified to do.

  • Through observation of all procedures of our SE System, risks in the area of Safety at Work will be considerably minimised too.

  • When operating machinery the manufacturer's instructions will be followed.

  • Where necessary or prescribed, warning and information signs are installed.

5.2

  • Jobs involving risk of fire are those working with a naked flame i.e. welding as well as jobs whereby sparks can occur i.e. the use of unprotected electric motors, point hammers, grinders etc.

  • Work with a naked flame always requires a permit on the checklist CL-021 „Hot Work Permit“ if it cannot be carried out in the welding station in the workshop.

  • Work where sparks can occur only needs a permit on the checklist CL-021 when a combustible atmosphere is likely.

  • After working down the „Hot Work Permit“ checklist permission to carry out the work will be given by the Master, the Chief Officer or Chief Engineer.

  • Hot Work requiring a permit under the CL-021 Checklist is generally only carried out when a safety unit with the necessary equipment is continually available on the spot.
